5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely enlightening 18 July 2009
This DVD extra is by far the most elaborate and interesting view on film-making i've ever seen. And know that this is not all, as there is even more to find on the kongisking website, namely the Post-Production Diaries, another 33 excellent videos on the last 8 months.

I can't thank Peter Jackson enough for letting us look into his way of filmmaking.

As seen on another website, these production diaries on the shoot of the new Peter Jackson King Kong movie are now available on DVD, however, now that you actually have to pay to view these things, a little more added content would have been much appreciated.

But I'm not knocking the actual documentary, which runs for well over 3 and a half hours. For anyone who is interested in how they make a modern day blockbuster, then this is it. Even if you don't like King Kong, or have no intention of seeing the film, if you are interested in how to make a movie, then this is indispensible.

It covers every aspect - from lighting and camera techniques to catering, make up and conceptual art. It gives a chance to see what people on a film set do - and not just the actors and directors, but everuybody right down to the person who makes the tea.

And it is done in a fast paced, humorous way. Not once did I get bored watching these production diaries, and for fans of the film, its great to see the actors filming their scenes, and messing around behind the scenes. Jack Black and Andy Serkis especially are very funny to watch.

However, I felt short changed in the fact that there isn't much from the actul finished film. OK, they couldn't have put completed film shots in the production diaries as they were filmed during the making of the film, but this DVD has come out after the film is virtually finished. Couldn't the DVD of had some bonus film footage?

The best part of the DVD is the anatomy of a scene section, where Peter Jackson talks us through one of the main action scenes in the film - and we even get to see a portion of that scene, which is fantastic and so more of that would have been great.

While this DVD is fun, interesting and very informative (thanks to continual input from Peter Jackson) it didn't whet my appetite to see the film. But I do feel like I know what it was like to make the film behind the scenes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peter Jackson puts Film School in a Box 16 Oct 2005
An idea that started with the LOTR trilogy and their extended DVD edition is given full swing this time around as director Peter Jackson gives humble insight into the making of a major motion picture.
These diaries have run alongside production of his latest feature 'King Kong' on website KongisKing.net - allowing anyone interested in any aspect of the filmaking process to see how it's done, with inspirational, educational and often downright funny episodic entries. Now this DVD will be the only place to see them.....
