3.0 out of 5 stars Gypped by the Gorilla, 2 Dec 2005
I can't help shake the feeling we're getting the raw end of the deal this side of the Atlantic when it comes to King Kong. Over in the US the original King Kong has been finally released to DVD with a multitude of brand new extras, documentaries, recreated lost sequences - plus it's original sequel (Son of Kong) and belated follow-up from the same production team (Mighty Joe Young). The spectacular collectors set even includes a reproduction of the original programme from the film's premiere in 1933.

Here in the UK we get a rather shabbily designed box set with two of the fun but practically unrelated 1960s TOHO produced man-in-a-gorilla-suit Kong movies from Japan and - horror of horrors - the colourised version of the original film. We also get a 12 year old documentary which first saw the light of day on the 80th anniversary VHS release.

Yup, bit of a raw deal...

1.0 out of 5 stars "They colored my dress wrong", 6 Dec 2005
Gaaah!
Is this a good deal for the Brits? _I_ don't think so.
I've got the Universal release from 2001 and it doesn't sound as though what's on off is much different...
Let's see:-
* Has it been remastered and cleaned up any better? Reviews elsewhere suggest not.
* Does it have any commentary by any of the film's famous admirers such as Peter Jackson and Ray Harryhausen or collaborators, oh, Fay Wray for example? No.
Does it have any new documentaries such as something about Merian C. Cooper or the lost sequences or...? Nope.

It has nothing new at all. Oh, there's the colourised (colorized) version of the film - something the producers of the film didn't have anything to do with and Fay Wray exclaimed that they hadn't got her dress colours right.

It sounds like a quick fix solution from Universal to see if they can make some money without spending any.

STAY AWAY - go check for a non UK release from Warner Home Video and see the difference.

Me. I'm not buying a copy. I want to see PJ's Spider Pit recreation and so I'm saving my pennies for a region free DVD player.

I suggest you do the same and wait for Universal and one of the weekend papers to give this thing away for free.

1.0 out of 5 stars You have got to be kidding..., 4 Jan 2006
By A Customer
I am writeing this review about the set itself and not the films included in it.
This DVD set is appauling, the black & white version is bad quality, they all sound like chipmunks or something (because it is sped up) this pal release is 25 frames per second, the ntsc release is 29 frames per second, 4 more frames in the ntsc release and it still manages to go on longer than this pal release.
The colourised version looks like it has been captured from television or something, analog television aswel.
How do we get such a bad version of a movie, the american release is so much better, i shall definitely be getting that one, this pal release is probably going in the bin, and i hate doing that to such a good movie aswel.
The only real reason i got the box set was for all extra stuff on it that you don't get with the one disc edition, i thought that dvd was supposed to be better quality than vhs, this dvd set is probably worse.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS!
Get the region 1 set, that way, you can see a boat load of extras, includeing Peter Jackson's recreation of the lost spider pit sequence.
This dvd set is an insult to a great movie do not buy it at all.
