Product Description

In a poll by Italian football fans, Welsh footballer John Charles was voted the greatest foreign player ever to play in their league. 'King John' recalls not just a vanished era of football but looks at the career and character of a great player.

About the Author

John Charles was equally at home as a centre forward or centre half, and joined Leeds United at 17. In 1957 he was lured to Juventus for a then record fee, and became a superstar in Turin, helping them to three titles in five years. He won 38 caps for Wales, scoring 15 goals.

Tribute to a Legend 21 Feb 2004
Format:Hardcover
On 21st Febuary 2004 John Charles died, and the footballing world lost a legend. Anyone who is anyone should know John, and this book is the perfect tribute. From his early days as a Swansea player to his glamarous Juventus days, this book follows the life of the Gentle Giant, the greatest Welsh footballer ever. Essential reading for anyone who has watched a football match.

This was a most enjoyable and eye opening read. I just about recall John Charles as a player, but had no idea of the financial difficulties he faced after retirement.

Although the best part of his career was spent playing in Italy, he is still revered in Wales as a footballing legend, and rightly so, as he was world class as both a striker and a defender.

The book covers his life, in his own words it seems, details its highs and lows, and accepts the blame for what went wrong later in his life.

He was known as the Gentle Giant, and this is how he appears. He just loved playing football, at whatever level, and it is remarkable to read about some of the teams he turned out for at the end of his career - can't imagine wayne Rooney doing that!

The book opens the window on an era that has now passed, and that we are unlikely to see again - although whether things are actually any better now that football has become a money making machine remains to be seen.

Highly recommended.

Great player 2 July 2004
By Fil The Power - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
He was really a great player, one of those players I admire despite not ever getting to see him play. I believe he is also one of the most underrated players ever, had he been Italian or Argentinian, he would be compared to the Di Stefano's or Pele
