This was a most enjoyable and eye opening read. I just about recall John Charles as a player, but had no idea of the financial difficulties he faced after retirement.
Although the best part of his career was spent playing in Italy, he is still revered in Wales as a footballing legend, and rightly so, as he was world class as both a striker and a defender.
The book covers his life, in his own words it seems, details its highs and lows, and accepts the blame for what went wrong later in his life.
He was known as the Gentle Giant, and this is how he appears. He just loved playing football, at whatever level, and it is remarkable to read about some of the teams he turned out for at the end of his career - can't imagine wayne Rooney doing that!
The book opens the window on an era that has now passed, and that we are unlikely to see again - although whether things are actually any better now that football has become a money making machine remains to be seen.
Highly recommended.
