Bringing together warriors from SNK fighting games like Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting, as well as heroes from other classic games like Psycho Soldier and Ikari Warriors, and adding an exciting story, The King of Fighters series is a dream festival of 2D fighting, and has become a household name in the genre, with many games released in the arcades, on the NEOGEO and on home consoles.
In a genre dominated by 1 on 1 battles, this series introduced an all-new 3 on 3 fighting style, pitting teams of 3 players against each other, thus popularising the concept of Team Battles. This series started in 1994 with The King of Fighters ‘94 and would eventually see the exciting Orochi Saga in KOF ‘95-’97, the NESTS Saga in KOF ‘99-2001 and the Ash Saga from KOR 2003 onward, introducing such iconic characters as Kyo Kusanagi and Iori Yagami, which have earned a large fan following the world over.
The King of Fighters XIII features fighters from the entire history of the series and concludes the Ash Saga storyline.
NEO MAX Super Moves
New for KOFXIII are the NEO MAX super moves, the ultimate move for each character. The requirements are strict and it takes practice to get the move to connect, but it boards the most destructive power of all available attacks and has the possibility of completely turning around a match. It features the most impressive graphic and sound effects in the game to realise the maximum sense of exhilaration and excitement.
Game Mode: Arcade
3 on 3 battles, 6 basic stages +2 extra (boss stages) based on player score
A movie explaining the story will run after certain stages to keep players immersed
Ten team ending movies and three special endings
During battle, ‘Target Actions’ are displayed which earn players points and gauge boosts if pulled off
Unique conversations for each character combination at the beginning of each fight, providing background story

Gives a clear illustration of numerous events not touched upon in the Arcade Mode
Uses 2D slide scenes and impressive animated movies
Stories are branched by offering the player choices, leading to multiple ways to enjoy each narrative
Game Mode: Online is used for fighting players from all over the world through the PlayStation®Network and Xbox LIVE®.
There are three online battle types:
Ranked Match – challenge players to increase your ranking on the global leaderboards
Player Match – challenge players to friendly matches which does not affect your online ranking
Friends Match – play with a specified friend by sending or receiving a friends invite
Online Ranking calculates and displays the ranking for all players in the world on the PlayStation®Network and Xbox LIVE®.

KOF 13(king of fighters XIII) concludes the story of the 'those from the past' story which began in KOF 2003 and continued in KOF 11. its a bit complicated, but basicly the mysterious ASH CRIMSON has stolen 2 of the 3 powers of the three sacred treasures (KYOs kusanagi flame, IORIs orochi flame and CHIZURUs mirror power) in an attempt to awaken OROCHI for his own personal gain, KYO is the only remaining fighter who still has his powers.
KOF 12 had no story mode at all, and it sucks, hence why its not counted!
but its not about the story, its about how the game plays........and it plays very very well. the theme of the kof series is '3 on 3' combat, unlike most '1 on 1' fighting games. graphically this game beats the likes of BLAZBLUE and other 2D fighting games out there with lovely, colourful hand drawn characters and backrounds that make most other fighting games look almost pale in comparison. the action is intense but make no mistake, this isnt like MARVEL VS CAPCOM 3 where you can 'button mash' your way to victory or use a 'simple' mode. this game requires precise skill with Dpad and button timing, and 'chess-like' tactics to gain victory. if your used to games like STREET FIGHTER or BLAZBLUE then youll find this game has a familiar feel, as KOF 13 uses circular and holding motions to execute special moves and abilities. there is plenty of game modes and bonuses to keep you coming back to this game. theres STORY, ARCADE, MISSION, HIDDEN CHARACTERS, GALLERY and more!
if your looking for something new, or love fighting games in general, then you wont be dissapointed with KOF 13. im so glad the series is back on track and better than ever, probably the best king of fighters ever!!!
The negatives come in the lack of KOF fighters in this series, some may think 30 is plenty but well and truly for a 3 aside game it is not. It means only ten teams when other older versions had double this number. Really enjoyable characters that would have benefited from this bolstered combat system are missing. People like Whip, Mary, and the boxer woman would have been fantastic in the game.
Second annoyance is that Akiru in his transformed stage has no right to be called a boss, he is skanky beyond measure and not truly hard but just a cheat. The web shoot and grab techniques (while your in the middle of a combo) is infuriating and he truly does not compare to past KOF bosses. He just seems like Hacks. A good example of a boss is Gill in SF3 or Geese or Rugal in Previous KOFs who kicked your ass but you couldn't argue as all there moves were painful but non skanky.
Except for these two gripes the game is an excellent a large step ahead for the KOF series and hopefully a step into making this game a true 2d King.
The best KOF game imo is the PC Mugen version, but this is also very entertaining. Read more
