Biography

The Stone Pushing Uphill Man is me. Of course, the image is inspired by the Greek myth of Sisyphus… a story about a man who spent every day rolling a heavy stone up a mountain, only to have to roll back down once he reached the top. This seems like a very frustrating fate. But there is a philosopher (Albert Camus) who wrote, 'One must imagine Sisyphus happy.' I agree. I am ... Read more in Amazon's Paul Gilbert Store

Guitarist' all know of Paul Gilbert as the fastest shredder in the world. He plays fast, difficult and very cool rock music. When he was in Mr Big, there was a definite Beatlesque flavour to the songs but it was unknown if this was the influence of the rest of the band. So when Mr Big split and we were told PG was writing solo material we all thought it would be a shred-fest of gigantic proportions! So what a pleasant surprise to be faced with a CD of the most delightful and accessible rock/pop songs in various styles and suffused with the Gilbert sense of humour. There isn't a duff tune on this CD, but be warned-it's so catchy you'll be singing it day and night! Having said all that, there is plenty of jaw dropping riffage to keep any shred-head in 64th note heaven! To top it all, he can sing really well too! If he wasn't such a nice man, I'd hate him! I highly recommend this CD.

This probably isn't the best place to start your Paul Gilbert collection (see the Greatest Hits for that) but this is a very solid early entry and absolutely worth having even if it's just for the shred-tastic Jam at the end.

Désolé, je m'exprime en Français.
Trés déçu par ce disque. Cela fait penser aux musiques qu'on entend dans les téléfilms sur TF1. De la musique guimauve pour minettes.

Paul having left mr big comes out with a cool album of vocal pop/rock with neat cool hip guitar
the only flaw is the solo at the end which isnt as cool as those who have heard screamin blues o mania etc .Fans of Mr Big should not be dissappointed

One of the best guitar CDs I've ever heard 4 Oct. 1999

It's not RacerX, but this CD is a must have for any guitarist. Although the songs are simple the playing is Paul Gilbert at his finest. The best thing about this CD is how easy it is to listen to, it's probably the only Paul Gilbert recording your girlfriend will enjoy !

Paul Gilbert is one of my favorite musicians, but this album shows his ability to combine songwriting with some serious shredding. While hardcore Racer X fans may be disgusted, don't be fooled...This is a smart, well crafted, great sounding CD. There are actually alot of great songs here; More than on any Racer X album(except Superheros, of course...). Nice vocal harmonies, too. I'm impressed and pleasantly surprised.

Having heard almost all of his recorded material (Racer X, Mr. Big and solo), I'm impressed of how good this (and other) solo albums is.
