Review

'If you want true literary genius, read Jeanette Winterson's young-adult novels, a stunning new facet of her career which began with Tanglewreck. They're too clever for me to summarise' Guardian 'A lesson in virtues of generosity, wrapped up in delightful prose' The Good Book Guide

Product Description

When a greedy king wakes up one morning, everything he owns has gone - blown across the bay to neighbouring Naples. When a poor and humble washerwoman wakes up that same morning her back yard is full of things that simply were not there the night before. Soon the king and the washerwoman meet for the first time and from that moment both their lives magically change.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful children's book, 13 Sep 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The King of Capri (Hardcover)
I bought this beautifully written children's book for my niece, who enjoyed it very much. It holds all of the poetic charm Winterson displays in her writing for adults, within a beautiful moral story.

With it's gorgeous graphics and strong hardback it makes a perfect present for a child who is just learning about the joys of reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of our favourites, 9 Nov 2007
This review is from: The King of Capri (Hardcover)
This is a delightfully whimsical book, and beautifully observed. It has a rare and wonderful quality: it shows compassion for all, including the "baddie"--a greedy, selfish king. The story never condemns him; it simply describes his life, and shows how he is eventually made miserable by his own behaviour. And when he is finally redeemed, it is without any smugness, just with rejoicing that all is finally well. As well as being great fun, this is one of the most gentle and joyful children's books I know.

My four- and six-year old love this book, and it has had many, many rereadings in our house. The illustrations are full of charming, funny details; the Italian-speaking cat has us all wandering around the house saying "non c'e di che" ("don't mention it"): and I particularly like the Wind who, after creating mild havoc with a tempest, says "You do these things in a moment of madness, and then you're left with the mess."

I've probably bought 300-400 children's books in the past few years, and this is definitely one of the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and beautifully illustrated, 31 May 2006
This review is from: The King of Capri (Hardcover)
I bought this book for my 5-year old daughter because I am a great fan of Jeanette Winterson's writing.

The King of Capri was everything I hoped it would be. We have read it many times, and the timeless reversal of fortune tale, told cleverly with gentle humour, never ceases to put a smile on our faces at bedtime. Beautifully illustrated too - what a bonus. We especially like the Italian-speaking cat(!) and the sweetly happy ending.

One of our favourites.
