When you listen to Mano Negra's 1991 album "King of Bongo" you are quickly reminded of the French singer Manu Chao, and there is a simple reason for the similarity, namely that Manu Chao was also singer in this multi-cultural band. Despite the similarities there are of course some differences: Manu Chao concentrates on more or less carribbean sounds whereas Mano Negra was influenced by rock and punkrock. It is very interesting to listen to the second title on the CD, "King of Bongo", since its lyrics and melody are the same as in Manu Chao's later worldwide (at least European) hit "Bongo Bong" from his 1998 "Clandestino" album. However, the sound is completely different.
The songs on this CD are partly sung in English and partly in French. If you like Manu Chao and if you are not afraid of some "heavier" sounds you should listen to this CD, too.

Another great album from La mano Negra, the most "classical" one, great rock music and intelligence mix of another styles to make one of the best rock CD's in the nineties, very, very critical too occidental way of live (just check Welcome in Occident, Letter to the Censors and Out of Time Man
No really weak songs, (maybe "It's my heart")and great moments, as King of Bongo, Don't want you no more. This is the last of the band at complete and maybe their best too.

Well, I'm a fanatic of Mano Negra and now of Manu Chao. I've been hearing Mano Negra's music for more than two years. King of the Bongo tells Mano Negra's life in U.S.A. Their CD is a rebellion against the occidental culture using alternative music mixing with multicultural influences.
