Hans Zimmer first came to my attention with his truely superb score for the 1991 film Backdraft, which dramatically captured the danger & destruction that fire could cause. Since then he has scored memorable films such as Gladiator, K2 & some not quite so memorable films such as the remake of Thunderbirds. However with King Arthur he really has surpassed himself & created an epic, stirring soundtrack that really does inspire & capture the essence of the film beautifully. The critics in the UK have been very unfair to this film, almost all of the reviews that I have read have unfairly compared it to Spiderman 2, I am not quite sure how a contemporary superhero from a Marvel comic strip can be compared to a fifth century mythical British warrior! I felt the film was truely superb, the casting was spot on, the acting was very good & the battle scenes were very well filmed, in particular the sequence on the frozen lake being a highlight.
Hans Zimmer has produced a piece of music that is as close to perfection as you are likely to get, there is not one weak track, every single piece of music is stunning. The score enhances the film considerably & I would go so far as to say that, through the soundtrack, we have witnessed what is, in my opinion, the finest film of the year so far.
I believe that with this score we can appreciate that Hans Zimmer is an exceptional talent, a true artist at the peak of his profession, where only the very few excel. This man can truely claim to be called a genius. More please!!
