Reviews

The very name of King Arthur evokes a whole world of chivalry and romance, of gleaming castles, gallant knights and beautiful ladies. With the attributes of a god and the failings of a man, Arthur is the perfect hero for all people at all times. His story contains all the ingredients of classic adventure: bravery, love, betrayal and tragedy and, through all, a vein of magic that has fired the imagination and lifted the heart for centuries.

Here, HISTORY™ takes an in-depth look at the romantic images of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table that have epitomised the notion of chivalry. We try to separate the truth from the legends and join Arthur and his Knights in the famous quest for the Holy Grail - Christ’s cup from the Last Supper.

Take a journey back through hundreds of years and decide for yourself what truth lies behind the legends of King Arthur and the Holy Grail.

• King Arthur’s name is synonymous with bravery, heroism and gallantry, making him the perfect protagonist for a classic tale of adventure.

• These programmes look at the life and legends behind this famous Knight, offering a fascinating insight into his world.

King Arthur and Medieval Britain is a three DVD set from HISTORY the History Channel.

Disc one is a 90 minute presentation on Knights and Armour, this film sets
the background to the age of chivalry, gives a reasonably in-depth look at the
development of arms and armour from the days of chain mail right up to the Tudor
age when for the very rich, armour became a status symbol with which to show off
at the Tournament.

Disc Two, comprises two films, the first is titled Ancient Mysteries: Camelot,
and tries to pin-point the Arthurian Court in place and time, and looks for
evidence that Arthur's famous battles actually took place.

The second film on this disc is The Holy Grail- the alleged cup from the Last Supper
of Christ and his disciples. Why do so many stories abound about this mysterious cup,
bowl or plate from biblical times? None of the stories actually agree, and are put down
to folklore.

Disc Three finally get's to the hub of the matter: Quest for King Arthur. Where we
learn of the 5th/6th century exploits of this legendary King or Celtic Warrior.
Geoffrey of Monmouth tells of Arthur's exploits in his History of The Kings of
Great Britain published about 1138AD, hundreds of years after the events, which
may or may not have actually happened.

Chretian de Troyes the 12th century French poet adds Lancelot and the Holy Grail
to the story. Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur written in the 15th Century is made
mention of too, all chewed over by authors and academics of the Arthurian legends.
None of which takes the viewer any nearer to the actual person for whom we seek.

I enjoyed these DVDs very much. They were interesting, informative and well researched. The one disc was about knights and their shining armour, and though this was not as captivating for me as the other two discs, it was still interesting. The second disc was Ancient Mysteries: Camelot, and, Holy Grail: The Treasure, both very interesting. The third disc was the one that captivated my interest the most, that is, Quest for King Arthur! The history and culture of Britain is always fascinating for me (I am a South African of British descent). I have always felt that the Legends of King Arthur epitomized the values and morals of British culture in epic stories, similar to Homer's Iliad, and his Odyssey, and Vergil's Aeneid. They are what every individual should aspire to! Very inspiring!
