Amazon.co.uk Review

It's got a round table, some knights, and a noble warrior who rises to become King Arthur, but everything else about this revisionist legend is pure Hollywood. That's not such a bad thing if you enjoyed Rob Roy, Braveheart, Gladiator and Troy, and there's some intriguing potential in presenting the "real" Arthur (played by Clive Owen) as a 5th-century soldier of Rome, assigned to defend Roman-imperial England against a hoard of invading Saxons (led by Stellan Skarsgard in hairy villain mode). As revamped history and "archaeological findings" would have us believe, Guinevere (Keira Knightley) is a warrior babe in face-paint and Lancelot (Ioan Gruffudd) is a nonentity who fades into the woodwork. Never mind. Best to enjoy the harsh, gloomy atmosphere of Irish locations, the ruggedness of Owen and his hearty supporting cast, and the entertaining nonsense of a Jerry Bruckheimer production that strips battle-ready Guinevere down to leather-strap S&M gear while all the men sport full-body armour. Hail to the queen, indeed. --Jeff Shannon

3.0 out of 5 stars A believable spin on the Arthur myth based on history rather than legend, 23 May 2008
By J. Carmichael - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
OK so it may not be an Oscar winner but this film is a refreshing look at the myth and mystery of King Arthur based more on history than legend. This is a more believable story than other attempts and is based on the most likely individual from history to spawn the Arthur legend. So what if the acting and dialogue is a bit off at times. My guess is that soldiers and knights of the time were not great linguists or extremely well educated so in a way it adds to the realism. Clive Owen does well as Arthur, and in the end is a better choice than a Hollywood A-lister as he helps bring focus to a plausible alternative to sword and sorcery epics of the past. The original ending is a bit "fairytale" but thankfully the editors cut version is more fitting for those who prefer their final battles to be the finale. I cant help but like this film, the music score is excellent and the humour is balanced with Ray Winstone responsible for most of the smiles. This is a movie about do gooders as you would expect but no shiny armour, magic swords, wizards or a handsome knight running off with a cheating queen. For those who knock this film, remember First Knight. 2 Hollywood Legends, a big budget and still terrible!

5.0 out of 5 stars King Arthur, 19 May 2008
By H (UK) - See all my reviews
I found it to be great fun and entertaining. A refreshing and good story line, well researched in regard to Roman army history and integration.
The landscape was excellent - who cares where it was filmed!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Garbage, 10 May 2008
By Bog Fog (Scotland) - See all my reviews
Take battle sequences from a host of much better films, cobble them together, add wooden acting, a generous sprinkling of cliche and mix with turkey gravy. Serve with absolute predictability.

Of my worst films top (?bottom) 10, it's probably a new entry at 5.

Spotted it as a turkey about 5 mins in. Watched it at a mix of x1.5 and x10 speed on my PS3 (handy function that).

Don't waste your time.

There are some holes in the plot such as the Roman family living north of Hadrian's wall that require rescuing from invading Saxons. Read more
