5.0 out of 5 stars Triumphs where Rob Newman fails., 26 April 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: King of the Ants (Paperback)
Even being familiar with much of Charlie Higson's TV work I was unsure what to expect from his novels. I was not disappointed. This is one of the best-written books I have ever read, twisting and turning towards a brilliant conclusion. Another TV comedy writer - Rob Newman - writes in a similarly bleak and gritty style but Newman's book "Manners" left me depressed. This did the exact opposite and shows that okay, the world isn't perfect, but we can all succeed in it. It is rare that a book captures my attention so much that I really can't put it down but "King of the Ants" did just that. I really can't recommend it highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vile and Hilarious!, 2 Jan 2004

This is the vilest, most stomach churning book I have ever read! Oh, except for Getting Rid of Mister Kitchen, also by Charlie Higson. I haven't laughed so much in years and I don't think a book has ever made me feel physically sick before, yet this does it repeatedly...love it! Keep up the good work! Can't wait to read the rest of his books!

5.0 out of 5 stars Higson's Best, 5 May 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: King of the Ants (Paperback)
Of all of Charlie Higsons novels this for me is the best. Mixes comedy along with a gruesome reality of violence and has a pace that makes you not wanting to leave the book alone. Brilliant!

4.0 out of 5 stars Deeply sinister
I have read several of Higson's books and this one always sticks in my mind due to several very dark episodes in the story. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book - but wouldn't call it a comedy
I did enjoy the book and it was very violent and gruesome. However, I wouldn't call it a comedy. Sure, some of the dialog had witty comments but as a whole it wont have you... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Dark, sadistic and VERY violent, but NOT funny!
I work in a bookshop. I was a fan of the Fast Show. I even thought the Swiss Tony spin-off was quite funny. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast, hard. With slick, violence that characterises his work
I love Higson's stories they race from start to finish making the reader laugh and squirm, and I often found myself squirming at the thought of what I had just laughed at. Read more
