Product Description

Product Description

Since 1991, keyboardist Scott Kinsey has been a member of Tribal Tech, one of the premier bands on the fusion scene. A distinctive soloist with a unique harmonic sensibility and a wholly inventive approach to synthesizers, Kinsey has enhanced recordings by bassists Jeff Berlin and Matthew Garrison, guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, trumpeters Tim Hagans and Nicholas Payton and saxophonist-producer Bob Belden. In recent years, he has produced tracks for Weather Report co-founder Joe Zawinul and also appeared on soundtracks to such films as Ocean's Eleven, Ocean's Twelve and Code 46.

With Kinesthetics, his first fully self-realized synth manifesto, Kinsey rekindles long-standing relationships with a core group of LA colleagues, including Tribal Tech drummer Kirk Covington, saxophonist Steve Tavaglione and basist Jimmy Earl. Special guests on this audacious, wildly creative outing include Scott's other Tribal Tech mates - bassist Gary Willis and guitarist Scott Henderson - along with drummer extraordinaire Vinnie Colaiuta, bassists Abraham Laboriel, trumpeter Tim Hagans and percussionist Arto Tuncboyaciyan.

Personnel: Scott Kinsey - (melodica, piano, keyboards, vocoder), Steve Tavaglione - (alto flute, bass clarinet, saxophone, EWI), Michael Landau - (guitar), Scott Henderson - (guitar), Gary Willis - (electric bass), Vinnie Colaiuta - (drums), Arto Tuncboyaciyan - (vocals, percussion), Jinshi Ozaki - (acoustic guitar), Tim Hagans - (trumpet), Walt Fowler - (trumpet), Robert Leslie Hurst III - (bass) Abraham Laboriel - (bass), Ronald Bruner Jr. - (percussion), Kirk Covington - (percussion), Cyril Atef - (drums), Alex Acuna - (percussion)

5.0 out of 5 stars If you like Joe Zawinul or Weather Report... 25 Jun 2007
Format:Audio CD
When I played this my wife commented..." is'nt that Joe Zawinul". Indeed this CD could be viewed as a sort of tribute to the keyboard wizard. But it is more than that. It is chock full of memorable hooks and grooves. My best purchase this year. Buy it

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Fusion Cd in over 10 Years 18 Oct 2006
By We No Speak - Published on
Format:Audio CD
Kinesthetics is one of the best Jazz Rock Fusion Cd's in the last 10 years. If you've ever wondered what Jazz Rock Fusion should sound like - this is it!

Scott Kinsey, having played for years with Tribal Tech and being strongly influenced by Joe Zawinul, has created the next phase of Fusion with his first solo release. In a blindfold test, you might even think that Weather Report just came out with a new Cd. His use of multi-textured layers of synth soundscapes is exceptional. Additionally, while he is laying down this lush musical density, his "less is more" style is the key to the tremendous success of this recording. There isn't a single moment that isn't screaming with style and inventiveness. I was captivated from the first note to the last. The music is like a journey into uncharted territory where every turn brings new wonders to behold. You'd have to go all the way back to the early 70's and the masters of the genre to find anything to compare with this.

A perfect mix that combines the virtuosity of Tribal Tech and the compositional creativity of Weather Report makes this Cd an absolute masterpiece. All the players involved are clearly at the top of their game and bring the musical concept of this project to fruition with all the skill you'd expect from some of the best musicians in the world.

Being a studio project, some Fusion fans might miss the stretching, jamming, and improvising. To Scott Kinsey's credit, while many studio projects are technically perfect but lack the spark of spontaneity, this Cd makes you feel you're witness to the capture of musical magic happening right in front of you.

The only weakness I could find with Kinesthetics is that it is not a double Cd. If you could only buy one Cd for a whole year, this has got to be the one. Jazz fans will love it, Fusion fans will love it, Prog fans will love it, and anyone open to creativity and spiritually powerful art in the form of music will love it. Kinesthetics is a powerful statement of the positive side of human nature and a breath of fresh air to the world of music.

I strongly recommend buying this Cd. In fact, I would recommend buying two as a back up in case the dog eats one of them, or Godzilla attacks your Cd collection.

Thank you Scott Kinsey for renewing my faith in the purity of great music and making something that will remain special forever.

3.0 out of 5 stars I love Weather Report, don't you? 2 April 2007
By Michael L. Israel - Published on
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I think the playing and arrangements are very good. Everyone does a great job. It's just that Scott Kinsey was not born Josef Zawinul! However, in every note and harmony, in every melodiy, he pays homage to Zawinul and his progeny. It's cool. Joe is older and he's not releasing nearly enough of his own music. At least Kinsey and his guys can slow it down. Joe's forgotten how to do that in favor of his Afrocentic hyper-beat stuff.

Scott Kinsey has sooo much going on. I just want him to tap into him... 'Nuff said.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST NON-WEATHER REPORT WEATHER REPORT YET!!!!! 11 Sep 2008
By ZAHZAH - Published on
Format:Audio CD
I have every Weather Report CD/Album released in the States ever (Zawinul, Syndicate & lots of Shorter,Alphonso, Vitous, Airto.... etc..).This CD is, for me, hands down the best post W.R. non Zawinul Wether Report manifistation to date. The gooves, the lines, the textures, performances, tones, concepts, electronics, acoustic blends, earth tones, percussion, accessability, abstraction.... all of it !! Big smile on my face when I listen to this ! Serious ! Excellent ! If you like Weather Report or Zawinul, you will NOT be dissapointed in this rare exceptional musical treat. What Zawinul came through in Kinsey's work with Tribal Tech is full blown boxing your bag here, man.
5.0 out of 5 stars Crikey, It's Funky! 18 July 2007
By William E. Hilson - Published on
Format:Audio CD
This is brilliant stuff. There is good reason why Scott was "discovered" after playing on Scott Henderson's 1992 Tribal Tech romp "Illicit", and named Keyboard Magazine's "Best New Talent" for that year. You can hear the deep channelling of Herbie and Zawinul, and so much more. There are songs on this disc that are so deeply funky. . . we're talking Headhunters funky here. . . I have not heard anything quite like this in a long, long time! Scott's voicings and layers are so rich, and his vocoder stylings are so much more expressive and "human" than mere synth patches. If you think you like fusion, then you are going to love this one! This is the real deal.
