A delightful CD for several types of listeners. Prog-rock fans will hear a delightfully fresh "Yes of the 21st Century" that occasionally ventures into metal-ish territory (not very often) but has the prolific soundwriting talent of (very good) singer and multi-instrumentalist Neal Morse for a foundation. Some of the instrumental passages could pass for fusion jazz, but are played with a rock attitude.
The haunting ballad "June" (which I understand as a metaphor for reaching mid-life) is an eternal concert favorite and probably the Beard's best-known song.
I bought the album based on word of mouth on the Internet and haven't regretted it.
Also worth buying by the same band: Day For Night and "V".

Spock's Beard wear their influences very much on their sleeves on this album and sound more like classic period Yes than Yes do. Though thankfully Neal Morse sounds nothing like Jon Anderson.
Its the quality of Morses writing and vocals that lift Spock's Beard up from plagiarism to homage and give the band enough of a contemporary feel to be interesting in their own right.

In short, good , accessible modern prog with a traditional feel (unlike, say, Dream Theater or Symphony X.

Compared to their previous album "Beware of Darkness" Spock's Beard is developing a sound of their own.

Previously the influences by both Genesis and Yes were obvious. This album has a much more accessible sound. It is like ordinary rock music without being ordinary.

I like it a lot because it is progressive rock (my favourite genre) without copying something already done before. Long tracks (3 of the tracks are over 10 minutes) without being too bombastic.

1. "The good don't last" starts of with "i. introduction" which introduces (of course) the theme that returns in "ii. The good don't last" and "iii. The radiant is". The "good don't last" is uptempo while "The radiant is" is a bit more melancholic.

2. "Mouth of madness". A rock song with some "heavy" passages.

3. "Cakewalk on easystreet". Rock song, nothing special

4. "June". A nice Ballad that has a pretty good close harmony part.

5. "Strange world" Very nice Rock Song, the text is a criticism to modern time.

6. "Harm's way". A lot of tempo changes, a real prog rock song of over 10 minutes. The keyboard is really great on this one.

7. "Flow". Another 3 piece long one. "i. True believer" starts of slow, "ii. A constant flow of sound" is more uptempo with rhythm like guitars. "iii. into the source" ends the album with weeping guitars. (Like prog rock is supposed to be)

A great album.
