5.0 out of 5 stars great mystery 30 April 2008

The author has a wonderful, wry sense of humor which greatly enhances his character study of his main protagonist. He also evokes a sense of the US west without romanticizing it. Highly recommended.

Craig proves he does not need the Wild West, he can create his magic in the city. As always a wide variety of interesting characters and cars. You will enjoy the sheriff comes to the city.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great story-telling. 19 Feb 2014

Believable characters that you can warm to and great story-telling. What more can you ask for. Well, a description of a culture that makes you want to be there, if only for the coffee. Apart of course for needing to dodge the bullets.

This is the third of Craig Johnson's Longmire Mysteries. It follows Death Without Company and is followed by Another Man's Moccasins. These books chronicle the lives of hard-bitten Wyoming sheriff Walt Longmire, his best friend Henry Standing Bear, and his deputy Vic Moretti.

This story takes Walt, Henry, and eventually Vic out of now-familiar Absaroca County in Wyoming and brings them to Vic's hometown, Philadelphia. Henry is showing a collection of pictures at an art show and Walt has come to visit his daughter, Katie. Before Katie can introduce her father to her new boyfriend, she is the victim of an assault. While Katie remains in a coma, Walt splits his time between standing watch at the hospital and searching the city for clues about his daughter's assailant. He gets to know Vic's family, members of the Philly police department, and some of the city's less admirable citizens.

One of my favorite scenes finds Walt visiting a gun club on the weeknight when Katie and her lawyer friends typically gathered there to improve their shooting skills. "Are they all lawyers?" Walt asks disbelievingly, as he surveys the crowd. "Yep." says the scarred Vietnam vet behind the bar. "Good time to spray for `em."

This is another good Longmire story in which Walt makes new connections with Vic's family. It is refreshing to see Walt and Henry cope with an unfamiliar environment and meet most of its challenges. A good read.
