Touchscreen display

New — A touchscreen interface makes it easier to use features such as X-Ray, built-in dictionary, highlighting and more. And with a glare-free screen that looks like real paper, you can read as easily in bright sunlight as in your living room.

Lighter than a paperback

Kindle is lighter than most paperback books, making it easy and comfortable to hold in one hand for extended periods of time.

Weeks-long battery life

Kindle does not require power to maintain a page of text, allowing you to read for weeks on a single charge.

Easy on the eyes

Every time your eyes switch from a bright screen to a dimmer, ambient room, your eyes have to adjust, which may result in fatigue. With Kindle, the page is the same brightness as everything else in the room, so no adjustment is needed.

Reads like the printed page

Kindle uses actual ink particles and proprietary, hand-built fonts to create crisp text similar to what you see in a physical book. The blacks and whites on the screen are uniform, improving image quality.

Every Kindle E-reader...

Sharp, dark text

Enjoy text that reads like the printed page. All fonts have been hand-tuned at the pixel level for maximum readability and comfort.

Flip through without losing your place

With Page Flip, you can skim page-by-page, scan by chapter or skip to the end for a sneak peek without losing your place.

Take and share notes

Add margin notes that you can edit, delete or even export from your device to your computer. Share highlighted sections and meaningful quotes on Facebook and Twitter, and see passages frequently highlighted by other Kindle readers.

Read comfortably in one hand

Lighter than most paperback books, hold Kindle comfortably in one hand for long reading sessions.

No distractions

Kindle is purposely designed as a dedicated e-reader. Indulge your love of reading without interruptions such as e-mail alerts or push notifications.

Look it up instantly

Smart Lookup integrates entries from The New Oxford English Dictionary with information from X-Ray and Wikipedia, so you can access definitions, characters, settings and more without leaving your page or losing your place.

Enhanced search

New — It's even easier to find what you are looking for by combining and previewing results from your Library and the Kindle Store on the same page.

Share your library with family

New — Family Library links your Amazon account to that of your spouse or partner. For the first time, you and your family can access and easily share not only your own Kindle books, but also books from the Amazon account of a spouse or partner.

Read more challenging books

New — Word Wise makes it easier to enjoy and quickly understand more challenging books. Short and simple definitions appear above difficult words automatically, so you can continue reading with fewer interruptions. Tap on a word to bring up a simple card with definitions, synonyms and more. You can adjust the number of hints you see with a simple slider.

Expanded X-Ray for books

X-Ray lets you explore the “Bones of the Book.” See all the passages across a book that mention relevant ideas, fictional characters, historical figures, places, or topics of interest. X-Ray's new timeline view lets readers flip through important passages easily to remind themselves of what's happened in the book, or navigate easily through images.

Squeeze in that last chapter

See at a glance how long it will take to finish a chapter or book. Time to Read is personalised based on your reading speed, and is constantly updated as your speed and habits change.

They can read thousands of books for free, including classics such as Treasure Island. And they can easily take their books with them without loading up a heavy backpack.

I read the various reviews available for readers and the differing options, tablets & lights etc and I only wanted a kindle that I could read books on, wasnt bothered about lights and internet browsing (that would be a tablet then !) and didnt need it to feel like it had been hand made in silicon valley
this does exactly what I wanted it to do, its light and easy to use so if you are looking for a book reader that dosnt make tea or walk the dog but allows you to read books, this is the one for you - thoroughly recommnded

This is my second ever model of kindle, having had one of the first kindles that was ever released. Having had two replacements for this when the screen started freezing, I thought I would have a go with a new model. Though the concept remains the same, things have moved on a bit since the first kindles!

The most obvious difference is the touch screen! As I am used to working touchscreen phones and tablets, this is a welcome addition for me. I really really like it. It makes navigation much easier and more intuative.

In use, the screen is perfect for reading from. It looks like a real book page. There isn't the unpleasant glare and brightness that I get when using the kindle app on my iPad. It is easy to read from and I would imagine that this reduces eyes train and headaches.

It seems that this new kindle turns the page quicker and more seamlessly than the older model. Everything about it just feels smoother and less clunky.

I've always been impressed with kindle battery life and although I haven't yet had the opportunity to wear the battery down, it should in theory last for weeks. I do an awful lot of reading and for me this is an important point.

Unlike some of the more expensive kindles, this model does not have a back light. But the kindles that do cost twice the amount of money, and my partner put his foot down!.... To be honest though I like reading in the evenings next to a lamp. Perhaps the light on the kindle itself is more for people who read in bed / at night without any lights on.

The kindle is able to tell you, based upon your average reading speed so far, how much longer you have to go until you complete the book that you are reading.

There is only one thing I can say, it is literally so much better then I expected. I was brought one as a birthday present last December and I was wary, at first. Reluctant to give up my books, my paper and hardbacks that I love so. But space was becoming a problem, IE I was running out of room for more shelves. When I was handed this, I was dubious to say the least. Digital books, something I could never feel between my fingers, never smell as I turned page after page. But all of that can be easily forgotten when the display looks almost as good as print, and the sheer amount of stories (I am talking about the kindle exclusives by the way) that I just simply cannot have in any other guise has swayed me. I still have all of my favourite tales as physical copies, but this now sits proudly in its leather folder amidst my books as a great little collection of stories... And once more, no one can complain about my books (Except that I spend maybe too much). Seriously, do not let he fact your books are digital get you down.

I use my kindle every day, for more then 4 hours or so, and I have charged it just the once since the day I brought it on december 2 I've had it. Even now the battery is at a quarter full and sat righ beside me as I type this review out. The screen has no glare, literally, it reads just like paper and that was something I never expected, however many times I heard it repeated by owners. Its light, easy to use with a full manual and tutorial built in. It is also perfect for my mum, as she has problems seeing since she lost the sight in one of her eyes. And the fact t hat you can adjust the font size, and style, it makes it perfect for her to use aswell.

I am now 81 and have enjoyed reading all my life. I have always wondered about the practicabilty of the use of Kindle and finally had the chance to buy one a a reduced price from Tesco. Why I did not buy one years ago and have all the wonderful ease of buying, loading and reading with this instrument I do not know. When we moved here to Richmond in North Yorks we paid to move in the order of about 600 books that we used to repeat read. You can imagine the size of our bedroom bookcase. We could have got the lot on 2 Kindles!! Once again Thank You.

I have only had this a couple of days as I write and think it is excellent value for money. If you want to read at night or poor light, you may need to go for the next version up as that has a built in light, but costs nearly double as much.
This cheaper version which I have still connects well and stores loads. Built in there is a user guide you can access at any time in the same way you access or read a book (if you don't deliberately delete it - so don't unless you have total understanding). In the contents you can also 'tap' a topic to jump straight to the explanation. You can also go back to the beginning of the guide as that is an option.
One reason I wanted this kindle device (my first one) is to read PDF's without staring at the computer screen. First of all I thought the kindle only showed them in a shrunk-down size and not in kindle format, but after research I found that I can email them as attachments (kindle set-up a user account for the machine so you can email to it, and you will find this in the support info and user guide) with the word "Convert" typed into the email subject box and amazon/kindle actually convert them to kindle format - great - I had tried this twice and they came through fine. I can now enlarge the text with perfect readable results.
Conversion may take a little while to come through, my research said, but I didn't switch on for a few hours and when I did they were done and showed immediately. (How long they took I obviously don't know - but the fact they do come through in the correct format is great for me).
