"...a subtle and clever thriller."

Review

A bracing new entry in the genre... a fascinating new author with a hip, noir voice.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Kind of Puritan - Penny Deacon, 2 Aug 2011
This review is from: A Kind of Puritan (Kindle Edition)
I was apprehensive of reading this as I find books set in the future lacking in the human element, they tend to focus on the "tech" however "A Kind Of Puritan" made me completely re-evaluate my opinion. I thought Penny's writing was great in style and content, she remembered that her book was first and foremost a thriller and used the "tech" as an interesting sub text which I felt made the book both thought provoking and more believable.

A great read and I can't wait to get my teeth into the next installment.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Kind of Puritan by Penny Deacon, 13 Oct 2004

This is an unusual and gripping crime story, full of interesting characters and a plot full of twists and turns that kept me guessing till the end. It is set in the near future, in a world more technologically advanced than ours, but it is soon clear that human nature never changes. The heroine, Humility, a "low-tech woman in a hi-tech world", is a fascinating character, and when she discovers that someone she knows has been murdered, her courage and determination to find his killer belies her name, especially when she realises that by so doing she has put herself in terrible danger too. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A far from humble debut., 20 Oct 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: A Kind of Puritan (Paperback)
The first thing that strikes you about this book is its sheer, scary believability. Not for one second did I doubt the near-future could be (will be?) like this. Even less did I doubt the motive for the crimes here - and when you've read the book you'll know just how alarming a statement that is. It is impossible to believe this is Penny Deacon's first crime novel. It is fast-paced, quick-witted and Humility is a character you root for from the second you meet her, because, unusually for a crime novel, she's as ordinary as you or me; we could get into the same danger, just as easily, and that is the real strength of this novel. All this and humour and compassion too. A first-rate start to what I hope will be a series.
