Kekele come out of DR Congo and are veteran exponents of the Rumba Congolese, with band member histories going back to the 60's and 70's. On this superbly produced album they've re-imported Afro-Cuban/Spanish influenced music and blended it with the Rumba Congolese style. The idea is a fusion of two popular styles of musical expression that way back in time had a common root in West Africa. As you might guess, the outcome is guaranteed to lift your spirits.

All 12 songs on the album were originally written by the Cuban Guillermo Portabales and this is probably one reason why the album feels so coherent, despite the considerable variation in style and instrumentation of individual tracks. What can you expect? Well, there's a lot that's recognisably Cuban, but the lyrics have been re-written in Lingala so the vocals sound more African than Spanish. Then there's distinctly African harmonies and voicing in places, but with charanga flutes, violins, sax solos from Manu Dibango and superb Congolese guitar throughout. The overall blend is a very unusual mix of Latin, African and European Spanish influences that sounds not quite like anything else you've ever heard, and it really works.

The sleeve notes are comprehensive and informative too. Can't recommend this highly enough - buy it now!

Blurb on the cover says 'For their 3rd album Kekele retrace their musical path back to the classic Cuban songs that were the source and inspriation of Congolese rumba.' For those dancers who love Cuban salsa and son you will love this CD.

Why are you not dancing? 19 April 2006

Cuba owes much of its music from the Bantu of Congo who came as slaves. They brought the drum, the marimba, and rhumba. And as Mali reabsorbed the blues of the American South, which was shaped by its unwilling African immigres, Congolese have reabsorbed its now Cuban-modified rhythms and melodies. And how! Kekele's third CD is their best, real Cuban roots music of Puillermo Portabales distilled through an African retort, with locally-relevant lyrics. Another full circle of true Afro-Cuban tunes that do not allow you to sit still. If you dig old Cuban sons, if you rock with the rhumba, you will love this work by Kekele!

This CD is wonderful! I own Kekele's two previous CDs but this is their best one so far. Even though I don't understand the lyrics, the Afro-Cuban sound is upbeat and warm (to say the least), and sure to put one in a good mood even on a not-so-good day. I just love this CD!
