What's not to love? Text in both English and Japanese, full color photos, and high quality vintage kimono and obi enough to satisfy the most ardent lover of these garments. Well, maybe enough for now. I've put another book in this series on my wishlist as I'm ready for more.
I handle hundreds of kimono every year in my line of work and there is always room on my bookshelf for another quality book on kimono. The text is very brief, the photos rich. More of an art book than anything else, the main focus is on the COLORS of kimono and obi, not their construction or how to wear them. Colors such as "coconut brown," "horizon blue," "cupid pink," and "lamp black" give one an idea of just how Japanese textile artist see color and how most modern western clothing cannot compare.
This is a worthwhile book for kimono collectors, textile design students, or anyone who just wants something pretty to look at. The kimono range primarily from the Edo era to the present and are all from the collection of Katsumi Yumioka and showcase some of the more refined beauty of these stunning garments.
