`Absolutely mouth-watering ... simply stunning'

Product Description

This lavishly illustrated book showcases fifty-five masterworks by Japanese kimono artist Itchiku Kubota (19172003). Kubotas unique method of decoration combines stitch-resist and ink drawing with complex colourlayering techniques to achieve hauntingly beautiful landscapes with richly textured surfaces and an impressionistic rendering of nature never before seen in the textile arts. Here his series of monumental kimono reveal an entirely new approach that elevates the work to installation art. This landmark publication is guaranteed to appeal to anyone interested in art, craft, textiles or the Far East.

This book illustrates the incredible work of Itchiku Kubota. His kimonos illustrate his artistic achievement in the skills of dyeing and embroidery. Having seen many of the kimonos at an exhibition some time ago in London, I am thrilled to be able to have a book reminding me how extraordinary and beautiful his work is. Highly recommended for anyone interested in textile design/history,

Thank you to the lady and her friend who stopped to talk to me in the V&A shop and who recommended this book to me as 'if you only buy one book on Japan textiles, this should be it'. We talked for a moment about our love of Japanese textiles. Not wanting to carry the book home, I bought it on Amazon the next day. Words cannot express how fantastic this book is. Page after page of wondrous kimonos, inspiring and awesome. Intricate, colourful, harmonious. I don't think I have ever seen anything so fantastic in years. The cover gives a clue as to what is inside - it's a mixture of Aladdin's cave and Alice in Wonderland, for it does not seem of this earth, even by the high standards of Japanese textiles, this book is on another level, far above and beyond. Do not wait a minute longer to buy your own copy.

Simply stunning. The book is very well done and balanced. The pictures are perfect, high quality, with the right amount of details.
It does not replace a trip to Kubota's museum though, but it is close enough.
A must buy.
