More About the Author

Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was born in Bombay in December 1865. He returned to India from England shortly before his seventeenth birthday, to work as a journalist first on the Civil and Military Gazette in Lahore, then on the Pioneer at Allahabad. The poems and stories he wrote over the next seven years laid the foundation of his literary reputation, and soon after his return to London in 1889 he found himself world-famous. Throughout his life his works enjoyed great acclaim and popularity, but he came to seem increasingly controversial because of his political opinions, and it has been difficult to reach literary judgements unclouded by partisan feeling.

after reading "The English Patient", I re-read this and Herodotus.
Even though it's more than a century old, it's a wonderful book that stands high over any political correctness; the kind of sniffy disapproval that George Orwell expressed for Kipling is just irrelevant. it's funny, it's a thriller, it is grounded in a good-humoured and tolerant morality. It never seems to Kipling to question the rightness of Empire, but he doesn't condescend to the characters he creates. His love for them is both evident and infectious.
"Kim" is a masterwork.
["The Histories" is pretty good, too!]

A very clean copy of the text. I only found two definite typo in the sample text (Kutu instead of Kulu, and Oh instead of Ohé). It's also very nicely formatted, with good formatting of chapter starts and paragraphs. Italics, curly quotes and proper dashes, of course. No real extras - a paragraph or two about Kipling is all, really. No illustrations or annotations.

Three stars only because of the price and lack of illustrations and annotations.

If you're looking for a Kindle edition of Kim, don't just search for "Kim". That only finds a few of the many editions. Search for "Kim Kipling" (without the quotes) to find the many editions available. And also look for my review "Kindle Edition Choice is critical" for a review of all the available UK editions as of January 2012. I can't give a live link to the mass review here, but its web address is: [...]

The soul of India is in this book. It's an extraordinary story of abandonment, courage and survival in colonial India.
