This 9 track CD was Kim Tolliver's early recordings under New York's Rojac and Tay-Steer labels. In as much as I liked Kim's other CD "Come And Get me I Am Ready," I surely wasn't ready to hear these recordings. Opening with the very gospel sounding "I'll Try To Do Better" does show some of Kim's strong vocal abilities and why she is often considered a great Northern Soul singer. The band really shines on "I Gotta Find A Way." "Let Them Talk" is one of the highlights on this CD because Kim's voice is filled with such passion and is the most memorable. On "Where Were You" Kim delivers a gut wrenching song about the pains of love....although maybe 2 minutes too long. The final track "Party Lights" is very disco sounding and probably was an attempt on the label to cash in on what was happening at the time.
Kim's voice can best be described as soulfully gospel with a touch of the blues and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, which may have more to do with her material than her vocal ability. The CD does come with some nice liner notes, slim packaging, although the sound quality is questionable at times. Sadly, Kim Tolliver lost her battle with Alzheimer's on June 6, 2007. However, she has left us with some wonderful music. If you are not familiar with Kim Tolliver then I would stick with her second album "Come and Get Me I'm ready," which in my opinion has a much higher production quality and better material.
