I make no secret of my dislike for movies that incompetently try to mix comedy and horror. The reason is simple: it almost never works. Comedy is tough; horror is tough; why do directors think that mixing the two will make things any easier?
Enter Killjoy 2, a film which looks uncannily as though it was made specifically to prove my point.
Some juvenile delinquents are sent off to renovate a shelter, as part of their community service. Unfortunately, their bus breaks down and they have to find a phone to call for help. They discover a house that appears unoccupied. One of the idiots decides to break into said house, but discovers that the building is occupied after all. Moreover, the occupant is a little trigger happy. So that guy winds up shot and his companions have to carry him along, in search of medical assistance. They stumble across a shack which is inhabited by a practitioner of voodoo. Moreover, she's not the only one who knows a thing or two about magic. One of the delinquents just so happens to have been told a magical spell which could be used to conjure up a demon named Killjoy. Of course they summon up the infernal psycho, and he proceeds to kill everyone in "wacky" ways (did I mention that Killjoy is a clown?) The first victim, for example, is trapped in an outhouse, and Killjoy gets her by throwing in his chattering false teeth, which, I presume, eat her. All the while the scenery-chewing jackass hops about hooting and laughing theatrically. The rest of the movie is pretty much more of the same. We get lots of bad one-liners, stupid characters who we are happy to see die, and a totally lame anticlimax that would be guaranteed to wind up the viewer, were he not so relieved that the damned thing was finally over.
To be fair, the film starts off as being merely mediocre, and it's only when Killjoy pops up that things start to get seriously irritating. But boy, does he ever make up for whatever glimmers of competence there might have been in the first half an hour of the movie. Any thoughts I might have had of going easy on this flick were instantly demolished by that infuriating tw*t.
Do yourself a favour and stay far, far, away from this movie. It's not scary, and it sure as heck isn't funny either. It's just a whole lot of pain on a disc.
