Product Description

Everyone makes choices, but choices have consequences – consequences that may cost Jack Martin his life. Jack is forced to deal with the past, while desperately trying to balance the present, but he is running out of time...killing time.

Eric Martin is murdered in cold blood, while his wife lies sleeping beside him. She is savagely beaten and left for dead. Somehow, she survives the brutal attack. A two million euro inheritance seems to be the motive for the murder, and the finger of suspicion points squarely at Jack.

However, Detective Chief Inspector Charlie Scott gets the feeling that there's more to the crime than money. Her investigation leads her to probe the dark heart of the Martin family, where she uncovers the horrifying story that is at once a bloody murder mystery and a heart-breaking story of the worst kind of betrayal.

1.0 out of 5 stars good idea but badly executed 9 Feb 2014
By QofPs
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Where to begin? The novel started well, & had the bones of a half decent crime thriller.

Unfortunately, there seemed to be significant gaps in the story, as though whole chapters were excluded, & there seemed to be an undue haste in getting to the end before having captured plot milestones or without explaining the significance of things. There was also an entire chapter of descriptive prose slotted in randomly towards the beginning, just to show what this part of Ireland looked like - which took the story nowhere & should have been excluded.

The detectives were initially the main characters & were described well at first. It seemed as though the story would centre around them, but after the early description, they became rather flat & the novel moved away from them altogether. Other characters then became more central, (the solicitors, for example) yet characterisation was sketched over & it was hard to feel any connection with them. There was continued reference to the murder victim's family, but it was hard to feel any emotional connection to them either.

In terms of a reality check, Police & legal procedure as described cannot be right & seemed to be fundamentally unlawful, unless the rules in Ireland are vastly different than the UK, & this makes me wonder whether the author had done any research on these aspects.

In addition, there were frequent cross references to previous threads (e.g. the stomach contents & time of death) but by the end of the novel many remained incomplete, almost as though the author had forgotten to tie up the loose ends.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read. 27 Aug 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Well written with good characters. Keeps you guessing up until halfway through when you realise who did it. Right at the end the truth is out..... and what a secret. Well thought out with a story that flows well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Jerky 30 Aug 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Good story but poorly constructed and written. Some editing needed, some characters` dialogue mixed up. Shame really as the story was promising. I was a bit distracted by the rubbish writing though.

1.0 out of 5 stars My first - and last - book by this author! 7 Feb 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Poorly written, with a lame plot, disjointed narration, and an inexistent police "investigation" which relied entirely on spontaneous (and highly unlikely) admissions of guilt. The characters were one-dimensional, and the "shocking secret" was revealed in an awkward postscript after the case was solved. Very disappointing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Get to the point 25 Oct 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I gave up about half way through, there wasn't enough background on any of the characters to make them likeable. It just ambled along at no real pace so I called it a day. Didn't even bother to skip to the last few pages to see the ending.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor 8 Oct 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Such a pity, as after that promising start I thought this book had so much potential. However, it was not to be. It went downhill pretty fast as it just frustrated me with the constant repeating, unnecessary information, and the boring deteriorating content. I honestly don't know how I managed to finish it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Only read this book if are Killing Time 10 Sep 2013

Started off well but went seriously downhill after the start. Great beginning but appalling written, the majority of the book just kept repeating the same police interviews/thoughts. Could have been a no. 1 but author lost the plot!

2.0 out of 5 stars Would not recommend it. 4 Sep 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Weak plot. Long winded. Poorly researched with little knowledge of police procedures. Characters not really believable. Really did not like it but read to the end in case there was a twist which did not materialise.

The answers seem to be obvious from the outset, but the twists and turns this book follows definitely make you think twice about your theories, a good read
