4.0 out of 5 stars Brutal yet Catchy, 25 May 2007
By Mr. Alexander Collins "xmetal loverx" (Maesteg, South Wales) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this album about a week ago and have given it a few spins. If you like Metalcore generally then I don't see how you can go wrong with this, it pretty much ROCKS! I've seen them live and they are tight as a pair of xx small briefs! Nice and heavy, some shouty hardcore vocal which melds pretty nicely with the general metal vibe (and some sweet movie quotes and chants to boot!)

I'd say if you like Bleeding Through (without the gothic keyboards) and It Dies Today (without the melodic vocals) with a splash of Unearth then you will love this!

Only reason I haven't given this 5 is because I've listened to ALOT of metal and I could pick the influences old and contemporary out easily which didn't exactly smack of originality but its still a damn good listen, as far as Aussie metal goes they whip I Killed the Prom Queen all over the shop!

4.0 out of 5 stars PARKWAY DRIVE- Killing With A Smile, 9 May 2006
Finally emerging from a long-fermenting Australian scene, Parkway Drive combine everything that people should love about heavy music and include nothing of the fatty, flashy, redundant junk of its recent times. In 'Killing With A Smile' they've crafted an all-killer, no-filler debut album that bursts from the speakers with a vitality and power that Unearth or even Killswitch Engage have taken a few attempts to harness.

And talking of Killswitch, it's that man Adam Dutkiewicz behind the production desk again, a place where his skills seem to grow and grow, topping things off with absolute clarity and a simply huge sound. 'Killing With A Smile' is almost perfect. The band is on top form too. Winston McCall's vocals are fierce, low and blood red, the drums hit hard, fast and precise and the guitars flip through numbing rumble to down and dirty chug to soaring and sharp leads with ease. The songs effortlessly do their obvious talent justice; 'Gimme AD' is a cutting, pummelling opener, 'Mutiny' a cathartic highlight, and a middle section of 'Romance Is Dead', 'Guns For Show...' and 'Blackout' is flawless.

If there has to be criticism it's that the breathless first half of 'Killing with A Smile' breezes past with a heady flair that isn't so prevalent in the second. And, although this album sounds unbelievably fresh, it must be noted that the ease with which Parkway have hit the bullseye here is down to taking great notes from bands like Bury Your Dead, Hatebreed and Killswitch.

However, this is still an album that could single-handedly re-affirm faith in heavy metal that doesn't need to whine or bleat or wear girls jeans to get the job done.

what can i say? this album is fantastic start to finish. recorded by KsE guitarist/producer, adam d. and what a fantastic job he has done! if you have the essential unearth album 'the oncomming storm', think of this album as part2. but that doesnt mean that that is a bad thing.
basically this is a very strong hardcore metal album all the way from byron bay austrailia. get this album now as parkway will be hitting our shores in may for their first uk tour! these guys are going to be massive!
you have to hear 'its hard to scream without a tongue', my fav track on the album. the guitars are crushing! you need this in your collection!
