5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 2 Jan 2011

This is a made-for-TV film which could have acquitted itself well on a general cinema release, it's so incredibly good.
Basically it's the (fact-based) story of how a conventional-seeming Mom from small-town Texas suddenly commits an horrific murder for no apparent reason. Brian Dennehy plays the lawyer hired to defend her, and the woman herself is played by Barbara Hershey in a career-best performance. The story unfolds in three main locations - the psychoanalyst's couch, where a psychiatrist (played by Hal Holbrook) uses regression hypnosis to tease out the reasons for the woman's actions; the police station, where the various protagonists give their version of events and, of course, the court room, where the trial and its revelations bring out the whole story.
The acting from everyone involved is faultless, with not a duff note anywhere. Hal Holbrook plays wonderfully against type as the therapist convinced of the woman's innocence despite the facts of her terrible actions (he normally specialises in playing oleaginous, sweaty sleazeballs, like the crooked scientist in "Capricorn One"). Brian Dennehy is perfect, as usual, playing the small-town contracts lawyer out of his depth in a murder case. But towering above everybody is Barbara Hershey, scarcely recognisable as the dowdy homebody who moves seamlessly through the evolutions of Mom, Other Woman, and tormented and repressed housewife, who finally explodes into a screaming banshee when finally pushed an inch too far in the court-room climax.
I don't normally rate Barbara Hershey; I feel that she usually relies too heavily on her physical beauty to carry her through whatever parts she plays, so that I've never credited her with much talent.

5.0 out of 5 stars shocking but brilliant 10 Jan 2009
Format:DVD
Based on a true story and originally called Evidence Of Love this has to be one of the most chilling ever made. It's about a married woman who has an affair and her lovers wife finds out then a violent confrontation occurs. Made for television 1989 and shown in 1990 this has to be the most violent tv movie ever made for us tv and also one of the very best. Barbara Hershey gives in my opinion the best performance of her career and the other performars are also great- John Terry and the always good Brian Dennehy. The courtroom scenes and the violent scenes in the house are done very well. I would recommened this to anyone looking for a movie to get your teeth into.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unlikely Suspect in Rural Murder 4 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Format:DVD
This is possibly the best 'based on a true story' TV movie ever. Like Psycho, it aims to make you sympathetic to a character at the centre of controversy involving horrific death - in this case, an ordinary Texan small-town resident (played by Barbara Hershey) who, despite being outwardly respectable and unassuming, is charged with the axe murder of a neighbouring woman whose husband she once had an affair with.

The price of this disc gives away the fact that there is little of real substance in the way of extras: credits, plaudits, short biographical notes on the three lead actors, and a trailer (plus three advertising other TV fodder).

Still, the main feature is a compelling story that definitely puts flesh on the bare bones of reported events. And Hershey's performance won her Emmy and Golden Globe Awards - despite her wearing glasses most of the time!

This is the standard that TV movies should aspire to!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Performance By Brabar Hershey ! 18 Jan 2003
Format:DVD
this film i saw on tv here in UK its known as "evidence of love" but the film to buy is called "a killing in a small town" it is the same film though the dvd comes with a trailer and some biographies on the dvd its fantastic ! and worth money

this film is based on a true story about 2 neighbours who did fight and one end up murdering the other neighbour gruesomely it happened in USA so its a true story ! all because one of the neighbours decided to have an affair with the other neighbours partner

barbara hershey played a good role in this film i am a hershey fan and there aint too much violent scenes in this film i mean there are a couple but not many but u expect that when its a axe murder !

but if u like shocking real life films this is the ideal film to add to your collection !

3.0 out of 5 stars Superb acting 20 Sep 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is not a film that I would watch again but I am glad that I did watch it. The acting, especially from Barbara Hershey is excellent and carries you through what is , basically, a simple story with just one twist. Buy it for £1 or rent it.
