Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Following the success of The Memory Game, Killing Me Softly is Nicci French's third novel--a genuinely compelling, often compulsive, study of love and violence. French is prepared to risk romantic fantasy: the chance encounter with a beautiful man in the street:--"He was wearing black jeans and a black leather jacket, and then I looked up at his face"- -who draws Alice, the narrator, away from her lover and her life. " ‘Please'," he said then, still not taking his eyes off my face. ‘Will you come with me?' " Adam Tallis is a hero: a sexual hero, certainly, but also a man--a climber--who has saved lives. Or has he? Told in continuous flashback, we know from the start of this novel that something has gone wrong, but what, why and who will remain in question. Adam is a seducer--a dangerous one--and French uses him to explore the devastation of requited love (what happens to a modern woman if she does marry an ideal?). But just how dangerous he is, who is threatened most by this passion, is part of the puzzle and intelligence of this book, right up to, and beyond, its remarkable conclusion.-- Vicky Lebeau --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

You have everything. But you give it up for an affair.

You're in passionate love. And grave danger...

Alice Loudon couldn’t resist abandoning her old, safe life for a wild affair. And in Adam Tallis, a rugged mountaineer with a murky past, she finds a man who can teach her things about herself that she never even suspected.

But sexual obsession has its dark side – and so does Adam. Soon both are threatening all that Alice has left. First her sanity. Then her life.

My first Nicci French novel and I'm definately hungry for more. I describe it as wonderfully addictive because like an addict I could not wait for my next hit. I started reading at bedtime and found myself unable to put the book down until it finally dropped from my exhausted limp hands. I picked it up first thing next morning and read all day between chores and children. The story was riveting, provoking and for the short time that I read, I was swept into Alice's world. I must admit though that my final feelings were probably not what they ought to be, for although I was a little scared of Adam by the end, I still retained the fascination that Nicci French had so wonderfully encouraged at the beginning. I felt the attraction of such a man and his eroticism. I wanted to know more about his motives, his feelings and so enthralled by him was I that I wanted to forgive him. I had little empathy with Alice by the conclusion and I think that my feelings were quite reverse to what I was intended to feel. Still, a good read and I'm looking out for more by this author right away.

Killing me Softly was the first Nicci French book that i ever read, and although i have since added three more to that number, none have gripped and engrossed me the way this one did. From the very first page French's introspective style of writing had me hooked.I found the description of Adams obsession was beautifully written. In the beggining i was able to identify with the main female character, understanding why she would give herself so totally to this attentive charismatic man. However as the story unfolded i found myself less able to understand her continued submissiveness.I agree with the other reviewer who said that even at the end of the book after all that Adam had done she still wanted to forgive him.I feel it is a credit to French that she could create a character who evokes such strong feelings from the reader.I found Killing me Softly engrossing and haunting, and i would highly recommend it to both male and female readers. It was a book which made me think long after i had finished it.

Unbelievable
I'm afraid I found the enjoyment of this book totally spoiled by the (for me) completely inexplicable behaviour of the main character who we are meant to believe is a scientist. Read more

Fine thriller with a serious side
I wish I could give this book to every Twihard. It's beautifully written in a good plain style. I found Alice very easy to believe, even though I didn't much like her. Read more
