‘The Sixsmith series has a buoyancy and delectability of its own’
Independent

Product Description

‘Killing the Lawyers…is entertaining, sly, jokey…cynical, well written, and teems with sparkly dialogue – all the virtues we expect from Hill’ Marcel Berlins The Times

Joe Sixsmith, Luton’s premier PI, is naturally on the side of the Law… Trouble is, the Law isn’t always ready to return the compliment.

When Joe turns to the town’s top law firm for help in a motor insurance dispute, he gets assaulted verbally by one partner (male) and physically by another (female) and, vowing vengeance, walks out. So it’s hardly surprising, when someone starts whacking the partners one by one, that Joe is elected the man most likely.

At the same time he is trying to find out who is threatening all kinds of nastiness against top athlete Zak Oto if she wins her New Year’s Day race to celebrate the opening of Luton’s splendid Pleasure Dome. Everybody looks suspicious, from her ex-con minder Starbright Jones, through her trainers, past and present, to her own family. And the only reassurance Joe has that he’s getting warm is when someone starts trying to kill him!

This is the third novel to feature Joe Sixsmith and it confirms what the critical prophets have said from the start, that in the depth of his humanity, the honesty of his outlook, the bewilderment of his responses to much that the modern world confronts him with, and the strength of his resolve to give everything he undertakes his best shot, Joe is truly a hero for our times.

By Mrs. K. A. Wheatley TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Joe Sixsmith is a supremely likeable character. A former lathe operator he bumbles around ineptly solving murders more by luck than judgement. I like this human aspect to him a great deal, although sometimes it is hard to stretch credulity to believe quite how lucky he can be when he so obviously doesn't have a clue. But you can't help warming to him nonetheless.

Reginald Hill delivers another good read 11 Sep 1997
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Private Investigator Joe Sixsmith is irate that his automobile
insurance company could so devalue his wrecked car. Joe visits his lawyer,
who tells him to go to a specialist in motor insurance cases. Joe travels
to the posh law firm of Poll-Pott only to be accosted by a female attorney
and treated like dirt by a contemptuous lawyer, Peter Potter. A disgusted
Joe leaves the law firm, shouting nasty epithets at the lawyers.

Later that day, Peter is found murdered and initially Joe is a suspect
because he had the motive, the means, and perhaps the opportunity.
However, because of the means (a broken neck twsited by an expert), the
police realize Joe could not have committed the crime. Meanwhile, Joe is
hired to check into threats aimed at an internationally famous athlete.
However, when another Poll-Pott lawyer is murdered, another partner in the
firm hires Joe to investigate the killings. Suddenly, Joe, not noted for
his ambition, has two headline cases to investigate.

Although not written as well as Reginald Hill's other two detective series
(Daziel and Pascoe), the Sixsmith novels have their own charm and in some
ways are much more fun to read than Hill's other books. Joe is an
eccentric sleuth, whose basic honesty seems to get him in all sorts of
trouble. Being a black person in a small English town also does not help
his overall standing, especially with local law enforcement. The recurring
secondary characters are all top rate players, who readers will love,
especially the way they treat and react to Joe. KILLING THE LAWYERS, like
its two predecessors (BLOOD SYMPATHY and BORN GUILTY) is a humorous
who-done-it that is worth reading because of its entertaining cast and
story line.
