"Our hero, and accomplices, embark on a lofty quest to track down the man responsible
for a series of heinous and gruesome crimes. Behind every murder is a motive, and from
every murder there, of course, exists a trail. Following the trail is our hero, LAPD cop
Gabe Quinn. Seasoned pro Quinn has seen it, done it and succeeded: in fact, so much so
his exploits have made him something of a celebrity. But fame and catching crime rarely
match. And in this, Quinn's toughest quest yet, his resilience is put to the ultimate test.
This is not simply about stopping crime. The world is watching - and judging."

My first ever review...

Have you ever read a novel that is so good, you do not want it to end, but at the same time want to rush through to know what happens? Well, this is one of those books. Upon reading it you can add me to the list of readers who felt it was amazing!! The worst part about this book is it hasn't got a sequel. Would love to see more of Gabe in future.

This book made a considerably positive impression on me, for two main reasons:

1. The way that the story develops. The plot has a completely authentic feel (helped by consistently accurate attention to technical details, suggesting that the author has definitely done his homework regarding police, forensic, and trial procedure), yet it is also somehow dream-like and spellbinding, so that you are sucked in and held in a vice on a journey that you cannot escape from (not that you would want to, or can) - right up until the head-spinning, irresistible finale.
2. The way that Houghton uses language. The author's writing has a tone that is standoffish, existential even; sparse, but consistently packing a punch, and replete with superb allusions and similes that could give Raymond Chandler a run for his money. One example that stood out, from among myriads: "She was tall. Rake thin, with shiny black hair down to a waspish waist. Skin as pale as a Scandinavian med student attending her first autopsy. Tight black clothing. And silver piercings in a Tim Burton face".

A totally absorbing and refreshingly brilliant book.

Should be made into a film
I couldn't put this book down. The writing is so brilliant that you can actually see a film in your mind. The description of all the places in the US are very accurate and real. Read more

A good thriller but lacking depth
I felt I was skim-reading this book even when I wasn't - this will appeal to some people as no words are wasted on fleshing out the book, despite it being a fairly long book. Read more

Not a bad book
As a murder and suspense book this is quite good. It kept me turning the pages to find out who the killer was. Lots of gruesome murders. Worth a read.
