5.0 out of 5 stars Very, very good., 7 Jul 2009
Although Killing God has a somewhat strange title, the story isn't as controversial as it sounds. Religion isn't the focal point of the plot, and instead 'Killing God' refers to the solution that Dawn thinks will fix everything.

Dawn is one heck of a funny character. Her thoughts and ideas (dog's names - Jesus and Mary, after the band) are witty and individual, and I loved being in her head. The narrative flows easily and fast, and I think this is largely due to Dawn's voice and personality - I couldn't wait to see how her story concluded.

Killing God covers a lot of ground, and is by no means a light, fluffy novel. It deals with broken homes, alcoholism and abuse, and is exactly what you've come to expect from Kevin Brooks. His books are a joy to read, and he has a fantastic grasp on teen life, expertly writing as if he's still that age himself. He doesn't hold back, and never patronises his readers - he just tells it as it is. As it is might not always be happy and positive, but that never stops him from writing about important subjects that need to be addressed. He's a writer to watch, and I hope he continues to provide teenagers with realistic, gritty literature. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant intellegent read from Kevin Brooks, 28 Jun 2009

(REAL NAME)
I got a proof copy of this a few weeks ago as part of my job and I was amazed. I've never read a Kevin Brooks book before and I think he's an amazing writer. Killing God is quite a strong title but it reflects the seriousness of the book. I love the way he doesn't talk down to his readers and speaks to them on a level that both teenagers and adults can relate to. I would recommend this to teenagers and adults alike and I intend to read many more of his books!

4.0 out of 5 stars the language is flowing, 6 Sep 2009
A Young Adult fiction written in a very clever way. It deals with religious fanatics, alcoholism, depression and abuse in a straight-forward manner - all narrated by fifteen year old Dawn.

The reader gets straight into her head and the language is flowing even if it's dream like and fragmented, full of quotes from the band Jesus and Mary Chain.

The main plot is that Dawns dad has disappeared and she's trying to make sense of it all, wanting to kill God as it was God who drove her dad crazy ... The subplot is the unexpected visits from her cool school friends Mel and Taylor and how they make her feel about herself. It's cleverly linked to the main plot as well.

The only reason I won't give the book five stars is the overly dramatic ending ...
