Book Description

2 Mar 2006 Jacobson and Kerr (Book 4)

Chief Inspector Jacobson and DS Kerr had been on leave when the body of a young black man, Darren McGee, had been fished out of the River Crow. The autopsy had pointed to suicide by drowning. But now Darren's cousin, Paul Shaw, is in town: a top-notch investigative journalist with an axe to grind and a claim that Darren had really been the victim of a racially-motivated murder.

Jacobson isn't convinced. But when Paul Shaw turns up as dead and as terminally-wet as his cousin, Jacobson and Kerr are faced with a baffling double-murder to investigate. And a dangerous confrontation lies ahead with the murky world of the Far Right.

Product Description

Review

Kerr and Jacobson are a resolutely uncharming pair of policemen who are a pleasure to meet, and who offer hopes for a more rich reading in future additions to the series. (WASHINGTON POST)

Compares favourably with Ian Rankin... a compelling, fast-moving story that leaves the reader wondering where he will go from here. (PUBLISHERS WEEKLY)

has a vivid sense of place... wonderfully characterised. (Andrew Taylor)

Iain McDowall has a superb ear for dialogue... very realistic. (NEW BOOKS MAGAZINE)

About the Author

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended 6 Mar 2006
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I really enjoyed this book. Once I’d started reading, I couldn’t put it down until I’d read all the way to the last page. It’s fast paced and so well written. I found I really cared about the characters and about how the story would turn out. I hadn’t read any of Iain Mcdowall’s books before but now I’m going to order the other ones as well. Highly recommended if you like crime fiction that doesn’t insult your intelligence.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Modern Police Procedural 1 Jan 2008
By S. Lloyd VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This was the first of the DI Jacobson and DS Kerr series that I have read and is set in the fictional Midlands town of Crowby.
The action starts from the first page and unfolds at a good pace through strong investigative work.
The style of writing is intelligent but at times can seem to be a bit cumbersome. The plot faces real issues in a realistic way - focused upon racial and political areas which can be uncomfortable reading at times when you realise that such actions are still going on behind the scenes.
The characters are solid and there is a stream of consciousness effect which gives them a reality that is can be easily related to as the novel progresses.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable 11 April 2007
Format:Paperback
I had to constantly remind myself that this book was written by Iain McDowell and not Peter Robinson. The storyline and characters were Robinsonesque. I hope DS Kerr manages to work things out with his wife!! Realistic and informative.

1.0 out of 5 stars Good Plot but.... 16 Feb 2006
By A Customer
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The storyline was good but the author seems to lack a flowing style and the writing is amateurish in places. I stuck with it because I wanted to know the ending despite it all being rather obvious. A bit like wading through mud with socks on!
