Forcefull debut thriller,
By Michael Watson "skirrow22" (Halifax, England) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Killing Fear (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the first of Allison Brennan's 'prison break' thrillers and, having poured through this one I can hardly wait for the follow-on 'Silent Scream'.
This debut novel centres around a sociopathic serial killer who has been framed for a murder he did not commit. Given a fortuitous eathquake in the San Francisco area, Theodore Glenn manages to escape from San Quentin ready to go in two directions: the one to kill all those who unjustly, in his mind, put him behind bars and two, to ascertain just who did kill is 'fourth' victim. Robin McKenna is not only the ex-girlfriend of the police investigator, Will Hooper, but also the manic objective of Glenn's sexual desire so she faces a fraught and taut wait for the expected arrival of her potential killer. The author successfully weaves a tight line between the killing spree of the escapee, the rekindled love affair between Hooper and McKenna whilst all the while leaving the reader wondering if, in fact, the killer will finally exact his revenge on the two people he hates the most. And fianlly, who did kill the 'fourth' victim who, it turns out, was a mistaken killing for one of the main characters in the story? To reveal more would spoil the excitement as the story races to a grand finale which makes the reader looking for that next story in the series. Excellent reading.

cliche and rather dull,

This review is from: Killing Fear: The Prison Break Trilogy: Book 1 (Paperback)
I bought this as it had a 5 star rating and said fans of Tess Gerritsen and Lisa Gardner would love it. I didn't. I found it very obvious and the romance scenes boring and not needed. Won't be buying anymore books by this author as couldn't wait to finish it just to see if something good would happen.

I have enjoyed all of Allison Brennan's books - this one was no exception! Glenn our escaped from prison during an earthquake, sociopathic murderer - annoyed that he was framed for a murder he did not commit and fixated on Robin (ex-stripper, now club owner who didn't like him), is insiduously creepy as sociopaths go. He is so well drawn throughout this book that I actually found myself looking over my shoulder and I read hundreds of serial killer books and very few are so creepy!!
The other characterisation throughout the book is extremely good, Robin has turned her life around after our sociopath murdered her friends some years earlier, on his escape his entire focus is to control robin - as well as get rid of a few people who have upset him over the years. Will Hooper the lead investigator on the murders of Robins friends is again lead investigator - Robin and Will had not separated on the best of terms and have to re-build their relationship whilst the hunt is going on. Some of the old characters Dillon and Caitlin and poor Patrick are either fully involved or on the periphery of the investigation which helps solidify the whole thing and enhances the flow. This was superb really enjoyed it and if this is the first of hers you have read - please do yourself a favour and try her others you will enjoy them - honest!!
