4.0 out of 5 stars Two fantastic Rendells- and so cheap!, 12 Jan 2009

First of all, this is incredible value when you think that in bookshops Ruth Rendell novels are usually 7 or 8 pounds each. For three quid you get two excellent Ruth Rendell novels, - they are fairly early works and are non Wexford.

In the Killing Doll, outcast Dolly and her adored brother Pup become entangled in White magic until a sexual awakening diverts Pup away from his now seemingly silly childhood passion. Alongside this sinister plotline, we meet Diarmit Bawne, a trained butcher and a seriously disturbed individual after a Northern Ireland bombing. Rendell doesn't just introduce " psychos" or murderers into her stories, she gives their point of view and makes the unravelled mind seem calm and logical to very chilling effect. At the end of the novel, you are asking yourself- was Dolly mad or did it all start when Pup sold his soul to the devil?

I haven't finished Live Flesh yet but so far I can't put it down. Part of Rendell's skill is that she knows what you want to find out and only gives you tantalising glimpses until she is good and ready. Its like a very dark soap "spolier". For example, right from the start I wanted to know what happened to Fleetwood after the siege but so far all that has been mentioned is the odd newspaper cutting since the tale is currently being told from the point of view of the criminal and not the victim.

Both novels are from her earlier work but her writing doesn't date and the suspense and psychological profiles of her characters are as assured as ever.

The other good thing about this two-in-one novel is that it took up less room when I went on holiday. There's nothing worse than finishing your novel halfway through your break and not having another one to read!

I really recommend this- get them while they're cheap.

A bargain price for two great, full-length novels by Ruth Rendell. Neither of these are Wexford stories.
