Book Description

On May 2, 2011 a ten-year manhunt drew to a deadly end as the men of the US Naval Special Warfare Development Group (a.k.a. SEAL Team Six) closed in on their prey, Osama Bin Laden, the mastermind of the World Trade Center attack on September 11, 2001. Flown from Afghanistan by Army Special Operations Command’s 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) and evading detection by the Pakistani military, two US helicopters flew towards the compound where they believed Bin Laden to be. Forty minutes later one helicopter had crashed and five people were dead, including the al-Qaeda leader. In this book the story of the raid is told, from start to finish, using specially commissioned full-colour artwork, photographs, and maps. The operation, codenamed Neptune Spear, is expertly analyzed and the events are told in a concise and clear account of its build-up, execution, and aftermath, demonstrating the skill and courage of the men who carried it out.

Product Description

"Despite having read several much more lengthy, in-depth books on the rise of Al-Qaeda ... this slender volume did present me with some new information, and the information given is accompanied by very well conceived time line tables, and several useful maps and illustrations." (October 27, 2014)

4.0 out of 5 stars dull artwork but a decent text 21 Dec. 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
So many of the more recent Osprey books seem to have illustrations that are not quite up to their forebears standards and this is no exception with the front cover being a good example. However, the text is pretty good despite the fact that we'll never know some of the finer details, at least not for a few decades to come as is (and should) be the case with all spec ops missions. If you're into this kind of thing you'll find it a rewarding read but Osprey really should push for better artworks in future.

4.0 out of 5 stars Factual overview 16 Jan. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A short book on what was a short but monumental incident. It does not hesitate to provide a factual critique which points out deficiencies in the training for the engagement resulting in a near fatal result for the men of the units involved. The possible political fallout is touched upon, but only barely.

4.0 out of 5 stars interesting window on the operation 27 Dec. 2014

Includes an investigation of Bin Ladens' radicalisation and terrorist carrier before moving on to the main business of Neptune spear. Short well written and researched with nice illustrations and maps.
