Product Description

'How can I, Iago Johnson, a) know anything about the fate of the universe and, b) be in any kind of position to change it..? I am not a superhero. I'm not a genius. I'm not even very good at science - ' Forced to take action, the ARCTIC 6 embark on their first mission! The Intended Kidnap Victim - not Iago's father but his Uncle Jonas - is a scientist involved with the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) project at CERN - the European Centre for Nuclear Research in Switzerland, where he has been working on Big-Bang theory. An Old Nemesis: Katherina Kreng has used the LHC to create matter-annihilating particles - the Killer Strangelets - which could gobble up the planet! The Solution: an emergency shutdown device hidden somewhere inside the long LHC tunnel, deep beneath the Swiss mountains. The Problem: only Jonas knows where it is, and he can't get to it!

I was recently introduced to this debut title by the up-and-coming publisher, Inside Pocket... The next book to be published, after the Titch & Mitch books, will be 'Killer Strangelets: An ARCTIC 6 Adventure' by C T Furlong, due to be published in June 2010.

After a childhood love of adventure stories, the author was inspired to write her own books - for us all to enjoy. This will be her first published book in the 'ARCTIC 6 Adventure' series - with the next book '
Killer Genes (ARCTIC6)' to follow in September 2010.

... the plot was fast paced and full of adventure and mysteries. The tech-stuff and science part was particular engrossing and worked really well - you could tell that the author has a really good understanding of the subject. This was used to great effect within the book.

The book follows the exploits of the fifteen year old Iago, his cousins, Cam, Tara and Renny, and his younger sister, Aretha. Joined by their friend, the bewitching Charlie, they embark on a mission to save Iago's father who has been accidentally kidnapped - by perhaps the maddest of all possible mad scientists.

Firstly all the characters have to work together to establish and solve the problem. Then they need to act to save Iago's father, and save the world from destruction. The book is action packed and a race right until the very final page.

This is a great debut start to the series, I am already looking forward to the next planned adventure, which will not come soon enough for me. The book cover is particularly enticing; it will have you wanting to pick it up and to read it as soon as you see it in the shops. I hope you think about putting this book on your summer reading list... I would have!

Killer story 5 July 2010

I enjoyed this book - its vivid, funny, worth reading. I started it expecting something fairly standard, and it quickly becomes really modern, most modern book I think I've read in ages. The Artic 6 are realistic, normal, not like book characters, but proper witty and talented in that way friends are. They are comfy with normal technology we all use; I'm so bored of books where it's a big deal to involve texting or the internet. My friends don't talk like Shakespeare or Enid Blyton; this book is a bit like me and my mates would be.

I was loving the excitement of getting together with a first crush/ love on Charlie, and it reminded me of my first love/ crush (even tho I'm a girl!). Loving the way the hero has to "man up" and be reluctantly quite heroic, seemed realistic. Satisfied feeling at the end -I never thought they would tie up the beginning with the end, but they do, pretty well, I thought. I think its the fastest-paced book I've read in ages, apart from one slow-bit in the middle which maybe you need to feel these are real people, normal people. Lots of it is quite cinematic, described as if watching it on a film, and I reckon it would make a good film.

This is a good adventure thriller for young readers with a real science based outlook that takes you to the heart of modern physics, namely that big magnet in Switzerland. I particularly like the way the characters, though still quite young, have to master their fears and emotions all the way through in order to succeed and save the world from annihilation.

It also got a great review on Kid's Compass, where it's book of the week.
