Kill Your Darlings is the soundtrack to the eponomous biographical film, released in 2013, which was written by Austn Bunn and directed by John Krokidas. Daniel Radcliffe plays one of the main characters, Allen Ginsberg, and the story is concerned with his relationship with other members of the beat generation in the 1940's.

The music was composed by Nico Muhly, apart from the last three tracks which are Jazz numbers, and the soundtrack of 12 tracks lasts for about 30 minutes in total. Film soundtracks often don't make good albums for a variety of reasons. This is mainly because the individual tracks are often short to suit a particular film sequence, and they can also sound disjointed because the character of the music is designed to fit the film not the soundtrack album.

However, this album is very listenable. Nico Muhly's music provides an atmospheric and emotional palate of sounds which can be appreciated without requiring the film to provide context and meaning. I listened to this music before watching the film and was drawn into the music. Nico Muhly plays piano mainly using simple chords or repetitive notes which float amongst strings or percussion with a sprinkling of electronic sounds. The music sounds similar to a modern classical ensemble but it has a dreamlike and unstructured quality which is very relaxing. The first track, Body in Water, provides a good yardstick so if you like this you should be able to get into the album.

Nico Muhly has previously produced soundtracks for the Academy Award-nominated film The Reader [DVD] starring Kate Winslet and also Margaret [DVD] starring Matt Damon.

This album is most likely to be of most interest to fans of Nico Muhly as well as people who really enjoyed the film.

Super ensemble... 31 Aug. 2014

Great film: interesting story, well-written dialogue, super ensemble. Fascinating period in American cultural history and a convincing portrait of the young poet, Allen Ginsberg. If this cover refers to the music CD that I received by mistake(mine), then 2 stars (great in the movie but not so interesting to listen tpo).
