A "background" must for Garveys researching their ancestors., 14 Jun 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Kilkenny to Murrisk: A Garvey Family History (Paperback)
I came across Rosemary Garvey's book when I first encountered Amazon Books last year. I was researching my own Garvey line then and now. Although it was out of print, Amazon got it for me in a few days. Since then, I have kept it by my bedside for dipping into, following my first reading.
The Garvey story is about Ireland and is a two-part story, as for many Irish families - those that emigrated from Ireland (for whatever reason) and those that remained behind. This story is about those Garveys that remained in Ireland, and tells the story of the family that was born, lived and died in the West of Ireland, and whose progeny remain there to this day.
Rosemary's book is written as a novel in narrative style. Like all good novels, the story starts as a collection of historical goodies found in an old trunk! What follows is a dissection of those Garvey characters that make up our heritage from at least, the 12th Century (much went before but that is another story). My hero has to be Edmund Garvey, a role model for "Zorro" or perhaps "The Scarlet Pimpernel" if ever there was one. All are drawn in fine detail, as much as historical facts will allow, and there is a wealth of detail without being anecdotal per se.
All the meat of the story had been collected by Rosemary's 2nd husband Terrence Garvey(1915-1986)one time British Ambassador in Belgrade and Moscow and his story of Kosova should be read as background to present day happenings in the unhappy Balkans. However, it is to Rosemary who we must say thank you for writing the story, producing the book, and presenting it in the way we find it.
Garvey researchers will be pleased with the family trees given as an appendix to the book, and the Annexes, Notes and Sources provide valuable background information.
