Review

Fi Bird is the most enthusiastic teacher in the world and she's on a mission to get children cooking. No surprise then that her Kids' Kitchen recipe box is practical, affordable and never patronising. Every child should have one --Prue Leith

Product Description

Kids' Kitchen is designed to encourage children to cook delicious and nutritious recipes for their friends and family. The 40 recipes are displayed on laminated recipe cards stored in a sturdy box. Each is colour-coded to reflect government guidelines on healthy eating (the Eatwell Plate) promoting a balanced intake of Grains, Fruits, Vegetables, Oils, Milk, Meat and Beans. The 5 colours correspond to these 5 food categories. Tips on how to combine the recipes are also provided in this title. It features a unique cookery deck that encourages children to prepare fun, tasty and healthy meals and introduces them to recipes from around the world. Recipes are divided into the five main food categories to reflect government guidelines on healthy eating. This title includes 8-page booklet that contains information on the benefits of each food type, practical advice on hygiene and safety and a glossary of cookery terms. Author Fiona Bird is a Masterchef and the founder of 'Stirrin' Stuff', an enterprise dedicated to teaching cookery skills and an understanding of nutrition to primary school children.

There was no guidance on the age these cards were aimed at, however as they include written instructions I think they are designed for confident readers. Obviously, my 1 year old daughter does not fit into this category, but what I was looking for were recipes I could make for her and as she gets older she could join in and then make them herself. There are several recipes that I will consider making for her when she is a few months older such as breakfast friends (variation of eggy bread) and apple volcanoes (apples filled with raisins, oats and apricots).

I think having the recipes on cards is a great idea because it becomes a game to select what to cook, plus it is easy to lay them on the surface while cooking instead of trying to hold a book open. I like the large size (similar to A5) as they are easy to hold and the text clear to read. Obviously the fact they are wipe clean is wonderful.

The layout is very clear; the front of the card contains the information about the recipe and the back has numbered instructions. The front includes a description of the recipe, the quantity made and the time to prepare and cook (or set in the case of jelly) as well as the ingredients and equipment required. There is also a reminder at the bottom of the front of each card to wash your hands.

If I was to suggest improvements I would like to see more parent friendly information on the front of the card such as difficulty of recipe and the type of cooking e.g. hobs or oven. Yes I know you can easily discover both of these by reading the instructions, but it would be nice to see at a glance what your child is about to start. My other suggestion would be for some blank cards to be included in the box for children to add their own favourite recipes. There is room in the box for a few more cards and think it would encourage children to think about food preparation further.

I absolutely love this set. For a youngster's cookbook, it has the balance exactly right - the practicality of the wipe-clean, separate recipe cards; the right mix of easier and more challenging dishes; and a good representation of other cultures, including some very interesting Indian recipes that you wouldn't usually find in a children's cookbook. Raita and paneer are two great examples of this - it's a fantastic way for kids to learn how these foods are created. Of course the usual favourites are here too (including the ubiquitous brownies), but mixed with youthful takes on 'grown-up' dishes like stuffed peppers, and an ever-present nod to healthy eating through (most!) of the dishes.

It's just excellent, and it's all presented in such a fun way that it will no doubt inspire many a young chef. In fact, you might even find yourself borrowing it as an adult, as the receipes are so good!

I left my 13 year old daughter and my 4 year old granddaughter cooking up a storm. They made quite a few of the recipes and enjoyed themselves immensely. My daughter had mentioned she was glad they were wipe clean as they did make a bit of a mess and the card got put in said mess, but wiped clean and still looked like new.

I like that these were in their own little box like mine are so look very grown up from a child's point of view. So they had pride of place next to mine. And like mine we could take just the card to get the ingredients from the shop, which we didn't have to write out if it was from a book. So the children did their own shopping which made it more exciting for them.
They shopped, they cooked and they cleaned and they enjoyed all of it even the tasting at the end. It makes a wonderful teacher on all aspect of getting the best out of their kitchen, cooking etc.

There are 5 different sections to choose from Fantastic Fruit - Milk 'n' Dairy - Vital Vegetables - Eggs 'n Beans - Spuds 'n' Grains.

A wonderful gift for any child and well worth the money I thought.
