I have been thinking about purchasing this book for some time, but kept telling myself it wouldn't tell me anything I didn't already know. How wrong I was!! My 9 year old son is an academy football player, and has 3 demanding 2-hr sessions a week. Despite being very fit, he was running out of steam towards the end of matches. I decided it could be due to poor food choices, especially too much sugar-rich, high-fat, nutrient-deficient snacks. So, I finally bought this book, hoping it would guide us in the right direction. It is a superb point of reference, and my son picks it up to check what is good for an after-school/pre-training snack etc.. The recipes are wholesome and nutritious, there are plenty of meal/snack suggestions for specific scenarios and there is an excellent chapter on the importance of drinking. Even my 12-year old non-sporty son reads it (no mean feat!). The crisps, biscuits and sweets are finally gone out of the cupboards. In their place, fruit, yogurt, wholemeal bread, home-made cereal bars and smoothies. The result - Increased stamina and energy and not even a whimper of discontent - Amazing....

I found this book very helpful for ensuring my daughter gets the right balance of food before and after her gymnastics sessions - it has lists of suitable foods to give at different times before and after exercise. The back section of the book is stuffed with appealing recipes, which she has helped to make too. The general text of the book is clear and easy to understand, with diagrams and tables to help the explanations. There is a chapter on dehydration and why drinking is as important as eating the right foods - a point I have to keep drumming in to my non-drinking child! There are also good chapters on what to do if your child is underweight or overweight. I found the explanations of the different food groups and the benefits of complex carbohydrates when exercising helped me sort out the often conflicting advice I have collected from other sources.
