Expected this book to offer practical tips to help children with learning difficulties but this is an "approach" book explaining how to ground the children when approaching a task, not actual exercises themselves. If you are dealing with a child with learning difficulties you are probably already using these approaches as they are the only way to get the child to focus but the child needs tasks to improve! This has therefore been a total waste of money and won't even make it to the charity shop

The Anat Baniel Method - Hope and Transformation 27 Mar 2012
By Rebecca of Amazon - Published on
Format: Paperback
When your child feels loved, accepted, and safe, her brain has the opportunity to turn into a powerful learning machine. ~ pg. 93

Imagine being an English speaking child who was put into a school where they were only taught in a foreign language. Imagine not understanding anything and feeling completely frustrated. How would you survive and learn? Well this happened to me and my parents were told that the school was bilingual. It wasn't! So in some way I understand the emotional and mental pain a child goes through when they can't understand what is going on around them even though they might be very smart. Luckily after a few years my parents took me out of this school and put me back in an English school. But the damage had been done and it took me years to recover.

That is why after reading this book I realized how important it is to get help early when a child is struggling. This book explains the Anat Baniel Method and how it can help children with special needs. The stories in this book are amazing and inspirational. Anat Baniel definitely has a gift and she helps children all over the world who struggle with autism, brain damage, sensory integration disorder, cerebal palsy, ADHD and other illnesses which cause development delays.

In the stories she tells she explains how to creatively help children reconnect with their brains and she does this with simple games anyone could play with their child. She also explains how touch can awaken attentioning abilities. She believes you should connect with your child in a meaningful way instead of trying to fix the child. She has interesting methods that really work to help children become more aware of their bodies so they can learn to walk or do anything that they seem incapable of doing that other children their age are doing. I especially appreciated the section on learning to be enthusiastic about even the small progress a child makes. These methods work and as Anat says: "Past struggles and suffering will be replaced with delight and discovery."

I can highly recommend this book to parents, teachers, therapists and anyone who works with children on a daily basis.

Not exactly 26 April 2013

Format: Paperback
I have never written an Amazon review before, but as the mother of a special needs child, I felt compelled to do so on this one. Shortly after my son was diagnosed with a rare and profound intellectual disability we made the trip to San Jose to visit Anat Baniel. We never actually got to meet Anat herself because she had taken three months off to go on the book tour for this book. Which was fine...her sessions will run you $500 an hour, and at two a day required for the intensive...that just was not feasible for us. We met with her colleagues (for the still pricey $250) an hour, who were all lovely, and I do believe have the goal of helping children first and foremost in their hearts. Anat, however I feel differently about. First of all she will maintain that even if their is someone in your town who does ABM, you really should come to San Jose at least once a month for optimal results. Who can realistically do that? Still, We met families there from all over the world ...and here's the truth...their kids were in wheelchairs. Their kids had Cp. Their kids had severe Autism. Many of them were on their third fourth and fifth visits 5,000 a pop if you include therapy hotel and airfare. Clearly these parents see some shift in their kids after ABM ( we, sadly, saw nothing) HOWEVER it is not the extreme shift that ANAT would have you believe from her book. These kids are not being cured. The anecdotes in her book are the exceptions not the rules. She peddles in false hope, charges WAY to much, and tries to convince parents that her way is the only way ( her therapists will repeatedly tell you not to do ANYTHING else in the way of other therapies) all of which sounds a little to close to cult like for me. She is a glorified Feldenkrais practitioner who is mostly interested in self promotion and making a buck...a lot of bucks.

A refreshing and dynamic perspective on approaching special needs children 24 April 2012
By Michele Shusterman - Published on
Format: Paperback
I write as the mother of a child with cerebral palsy and the founder of the website If I had to choose one book to read about helping special needs children this would be it. The Anat Baniel Method (based on the work of Moshe Feldenkrais), has been the most enlightening and powerful approach we have found for helping our daughter. It is both a way of being with, approaching, and thinking about special needs children, along with being a hands-on non-medical modality.

In Kids Beyond Limits, Anat Baniel articulates what her work is about and how it differs from traditional approaches that often try to "fix" the child. Conventional therapies often place children in positions that look developmentally appropriate, but the brain has not yet prepared the foundation for the child to comfortably and successfully maintain it. The Anat Baniel Method focuses upon intimately meeting the child wherever he or she is developmentally and helping him/her grow from there.

Instead of trying to get the child to develop a specific skill, the Anat Baniel method primes the child's brain and nervous system to create change through gentle, subtle variations in movement guided by the practitioner. By experiencing these changes the child begins to feel new ways of being in his/her body, relating to him/herself, and in turn the outside world. The author further discusses how her approach allows the brain to experiment and create its own solutions to moving ahead developmentally and she discusses why this is imperative.

Her approach is based upon the "Nine Essentials", which is the culmination of 30 years experience of working hands-on with special needs children. In Kids Beyond Limits, Anat Baniel discusses these "Nine Essentials" in depth with clear examples and she explains how and why the brain is most poised to change its limiting patterns under these conditions. By following these principles Anat Baniel has helped children develop clarity within and begin to free themselves physically, cognitively, and/or emotionally.

After reading the book, you can begin to integrate some of these ideas and methods with your child at home. The book is not intended to teach the reader how to practice movements on children (which is done by certified professionals). Instead, it allows the parent, caregiver, or therapist to learn new ideas about relating to special needs children, in order to optimize their learning potential.

Learning the principles through the book is fundamental to understanding the work itself but it is not a substitute for experiencing the benefits of having a child work with a practitioner. Once we started this approach and learned more intimately about the work by working with ABM practitioners, it became the foundation of our daily interactions with our daughter. We have seen her learn new ways of being in her body, thinking about herself, and how she relates to other people.

It is my hope that some day all special-needs children and their parents will have access to this work and its benefits. The Anat Baniel Method is profound and powerful. This book is the clearest most useful introduction to this practice which can change the way special needs kids are cared for. My words cannot do it justice.

Simply Amazing...words can't describe the changes in my daughter 1 Sep 2013
By j'smom - Published on
Format: Paperback
For the purpose of transparency, I'm not finished reading the book yet. It was given to me to borrow from our therapist, who was trained by the author on the Anat Baniel Method. Our daughter is 2 and has some sensory integration issues but has no formal diagnosis. MRI and genetic testing returned normal results. She is 'disorganized' and we have had PT, OT and speech therapy for over a year and a half. We still couldn't figure out why she wasn't making connections on how to move. She can move all parts of her body, she just doesn't know the process to put everything together to make meaningful movements like pulling to stand or using her hands well. She is a sensory avoider with tactile things and certain images. Our new PT suggested we see a woman in our area that is a 'craniocascral therapist'. After doing a bit of research, we went to the session thinking it would probably be some voodoo hippie stuff (nothing against hippies or voodoo), I just didn't have high expectations. We met 'J' and she immediately calmed my daughters spastic movements, sweaty palms and feet from the stress of being touched and within 10 minutes, my daughter was making conversational sounds, climbing onto her dad, playing peekaboo with her brother and completely at ease with herself. It was almost too unbelievable. I tried explaining it to my family and friends afterwards and I knew I sounded like a nut. Later that night, my daughter crawled to the dog dish and started splashing in his water bowl. She was exploring her environment like it was the first time she had been there, and she was having fun doing it!
My husband and I both have medical backgrounds and were so fixated on a diagnosis and wanted to know what was wrong with her. We are not really ones that believed in alternative medicines or therapies. We hung our hats on modern medicine, pharmaceutical intervention and invasive testing. Anything outside of that seemed a little hokey to us.
We didn't understand what J was doing during our sessions until we started reading this book and digging into how the brain organizes the body. The ideas that Anat gives in the book on the Essentials is so simple, yet feeds the brain in very complex ways, creating new road maps. When I play with her, I make it useful and thoughtful play and I see her waking up. She is waking up to this new body and mind and it is nothing short of amazing. Some days the changes are ever present, some days there is little change but she is progressing at a rate that couldn't even come close to all the other therapists we've seen.
I have recommended this book to all of my friends with kids that don't have special needs because it can help them in so many ways they have never thought about.
My motto is Play with Purpose now. Special needs or not, our brains are miraculously complex and there are no limits on what they can do.

Truly amazing results are possible... 29 Mar 2012
By MakeMySiteRankdotcom - Published on
Format: Paperback
I have known of Anat Baniel and her work for about 10 years, and over that time, I have seen her work with numerous children that were basically written off as hopeless by the medical establishment. Yet, time after time I saw those same "hopeless" children achieve results that were so amazing that their parents were thrilled and their pediatricians were astounded.

The new book Kids Beyond Limits finally brings this knowledge out to the world in a much more accessible way to spread the word about the results that are possible by helping the brain learn new patterns which can solve a wide array of problem areas for kids and adults, too.

When I was first exposed to her work, it almost seemed to good to be true, but having seen case after case over ten years, I have seen that the Anat Baniel Method achieves what seems to be miraculous results time and again. And even more amazing to me is that Anat teaches her method to others and they ALSO can get these amazing results. To me, with a background in engineering, the fact that OTHERS can also achieve results proves that the METHOD is what works, and it is not just the special talent of one individual. And now she is sharing this information with the world. I am so pleased that Anat wrote this book, and I highly recommend it.
