4.0 out of 5 stars The pros and cons of kiddyguard., 10 Jul 2007
Durability:1.0 out of 5 stars Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars Educational:1.0 out of 5 stars
This is a great baby gate if you want your gates out of the way when not in use as obviously it rolls up. This prevents you having to shout 'watch the gate' at your toddler every time you go up the stairs to stop them banging into it. The downside is that is is quite awkward to open and close. It can be done with one hand but it is not as easy as a normal gate. We found it hard to put up. It does come with 'banister fixings' but these really are for the spindle bits rather than the post and were far too narrow to be of any use. You can put it up it in the same way as any other gate though. The bottom of the gate has to be in contact with the floor so if you have a skirting board where you are putting your gate, you have to get a piece of wood the same thickness as the skirting board and fix it to the wall so that the gate is flat against the wall.

FIVE MONTHS LATER and the gate is driving us mad! When you retract the gate it makes a very loud clicking noise unless you hold the button down with your other hand. This makes our baby almost jump out of my arms and down the stairs. Sometimes it does not roll up properly and you have to pull it out and do it all over again. The fabric is starting to fray at the top. I would not recommend this gate, the only advantage is that the gate is neater when it is open but it is not worth all of bad points.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!!!!, 22 Jan 2008

Pros
-Rolls away, and no trip bar
-Softer than a normal gate if you child falls near it
-Your child is very unlikely to be able to operate it

Cons-
-Difficult to install
-The roller sticks out a fair bit from the wall
-The blind part hangs rather saggy after a while
-NOISY NOISY NOISY to close! unless holding down button at same time which is ackward. And i didnt figure this out til after my son has been woken up a few dozen times by it! Grrrr
-Sticky fingers look awful on it
-One handed operation is very difficult! I usually had to knock the bottom part with my foot to unhook it if i was holding my child and was trying to do it one handed
-Sometimes doesnt retract properly. You end up opening and shutting it a few times to correct.

Put it this way when i had it installed i used to jump over it to save the pain of opening and closing it. We have now moved house and needless to say we bought a screw fix wooden gate! easy peasy!

1.0 out of 5 stars The KiddyGuard 'catch' - no pun intended!, 31 May 2008

Ever had the feeling you've been had?! Lascal are really taking advantage of parents by charging £7.99 for essentially a block of plastic with two holes in it. You need to buy them as extras for the KiddyGuard if you have walls with skirting boards. I thought all houses had skirting? Unfortunately I have to buy four of these blocks because I made the mistake of buying two already expensive KiddyGuards. I'll chalk this one down to experience!

4.0 out of 5 stars agree with other reviews, but this gate does have it's advantages
I agree, the noise the gate makes as you open it is enough to wake my daughter or husband, also it's too fiddly to open with one hand so, in spite of being 8 months pregnant, I... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars A good solution
This product is good. When not in use it retracts to a discrete size. It is fiddly at first to open and close but there is a knack and once mastered it is quick to operate. Read more
