The child who received this could build his own working city using just Lego, so I was a bit worried that this would end up in the attic after Christmas, but he has asked Santa and Santa obliged. There are very few parts considering the size of the box, but he has managed to make some simple and fun things not listed (viking ship and a scorpion.) I've ordered another "pals" set to add to this, mainly for the unique pieces like fins, etc. The good thing about having the small amount of pieces is that younger kids sometimes get overwhelmed with the amount and/or the needed pieces cannot be easily found. But two "pals" sets could easily fit into one of the cases. He's enjoyed them and I would recommend them.

Great for much older than 3 as well

My son got a Kid's K'Nex set when he was about 3, per the 3 + range on the package, and while he really liked making the animals, he required a LOT of help and was frustrated if he tried to do it on his own. He also rarely used his own imagination.
However, when he was 5, he started using them again -- following the instructions to build his own creations, and used his imagination to make other "contraptions" as he called them.
We got him this set for Christmas when he was 5 1/2, and he loves it!
This is a good kit to add to a collection, or try out to see if your child likes them. There aren't a whole lot of pieces, so one of the larger kits is good to have, but what we particularly like is the nice sturdy case to carry them in (even tote from place to place if traveling or visiting). Another thing is there are holes in the case so that they can stand the things they make on the box.
So, even though this is rated age 3 and up, I highly recommend it for the middle to older range as well.

My family loves this product. We spend a lot of time together building undersea creatures and other things. My daughter (3) needs help following the instructions to build these creatures, but gets great pleasure out of trying. My son (20 mo) is too young for this product but will put pieces together, enjoying himself thoroughly. This is a good starter kit.
