Product Description

Violent, sexy – and not for the squeamish…

Rosanna Nixon – a small but feisty one-girl awkward squad known as the Mouse – is beginning to realize that her job is choking her to death. Her rival tabloid newshounds want to screw her – in every way – and they haven’t got a hope in hell. When a young convict dies during violence at a Scottish jail, she alone refuses to accept the official line it was an accident. She wants the truth.

The authorities, panicking, transfer the wildest prisoners down to England – including the brother of the murdered man. Known as the Animal, and burning for revenge, he is dumped blindly into a prison that is already like an unexploded bomb. It holds murderers, terrorists, a US gangster betrayed by the CIA, and a multi-millionaire whose corrupt tentacles reach into the very highest levels of government. He will do anything to get out.

The Mouse, brutally discouraged by the establishment, needs an ally, fast. Her shady contacts put her onto Andrew Forbes, who has been a thorn in the flesh of the masters of the universe for years. Very soon they are a team, then lovers, living under constant surveillance and harassment in Forbes’s rundown London house. As the cauldron of violence in the prison begins to boil over, the fuse of their own destruction is being lit.

This is a book about some very modern sicknesses – rampant greed, police corruption, abuse of power in the highest places. Andrew and the Mouse know the worst is coming. And that they are being stalked by death.

Kicking Off is the first book in a series. The Bonus Boys will be out on Kindle soon.

Before it became an ebook, film-maker Roger Graef (The Police, Closing Ranks, The Secret Policeman’s Ball) said of this novel: ‘A compulsive read that feeds your paranoia.’ Convicted murderer Jimmy Boyle (A Sense of Freedom, Pain of Confinement: Prison Diaries) said: ‘I found myself being drawn back into that twilight world again, despite myself. I was grossly entertained and thrilled.’

5.0 out of 5 stars gripping read - scary subject 18 Feb 2012

How many times do we read or watch something that tells us that the prison situation is approaching crisis? How quickly do we forget the statistics and brush the situation from our minds? In Jan Needle's violent and fast-paced thriller, the crisis is here, a prison is out of control. There's no idealisation of the prisoners - terrifying prison 'barons', the confused and mentally ill, the bullies and the bullied - but there is little doubt that the real villains are not in The Scar but in Westminster and Queen Anne's Gate. I especially enjoyed the political intrigues and the sympathetic characterisation of the two small people who try to discover the truth.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rivetting stuff! 1 Sep 2012

I would hesitate to say I enjoyed 'Kicking Off'. At times I found it stomach churning. The violence (and the sex) was extreme and at times repulsive. The characters, inside and outside the penal system displayed all the worst excesses of human behaviour. At times the depravity beggared belief. Nonetheless I found it a compulsive read and a fascinating study of how the worst of the criminal classes will behave when opportunities to turn the tables come their way. Anyone who saw glimpses of the Strangeways riots of twenty years ago will appreciate that given the chance and conditions people will behave like animals. For politicians and their ilk of course it comes naturally. A disturbing novel, but a very good one. Kicking Off

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant tour de force 21 Jun 2012

A gripping and sometimes frightening vision of a prison system gone beserk. Examines the morals (or lack of), the vices and corruption that exist in many of the UK's institutions.
