Fans of Little Feat will be used to a high standard of live album, mixing old and new material. This one is all new songs, and the songs are stronger than on any of the recent studio albums. OK, so we all miss the star quality that was Lowell George, but the rest of the band are top performers, and with good material, they make sounds that are polished but exciting. Listen to this, and you will want to listen to more Little Feat.
Bill Payne is, as ever, majestic on keyboards, but the album shows a move to more guitar-based instrumentation. 'I do what the telphone tells me to do' has a strong guitar riff, and a sound that is reminiscent of Frank Zappa's Hot Rats. Other highlights are Walking as Two, and the haunting Fighting the Mosquito Wars.
The album features less of Shaun Murphy on vocals (she only has one solo lead vocal) than recent albums by the band, but I feel that this takes the band back closer to the sound that fans enjoy.
A good album for Feat fans, or for those new to the group. But when are they going to perform in Britain again?
