5.0 out of 5 stars ROTTING; in a good way! 6 Nov 2001
By Gavoid
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Ye gods! Anyone who liked Burning Witch will love this, 'Witch guitarist Stephen o'Malley's new band. Very hard to describe to the uninitiated ear it could perhaps be labelled "BEYOND DOOM!" Its just an impossibly HEAVY slab of doom metal with absolutely tortured vocals that sound like the bastard offspring of an undead serial killer and a cement mixer. Indeed, if Burning Witch played the soundtrack for the journey into death, then Khanate continue that song beyond the gates, beneath the soil and into some hellish afterlife! Very disturbed, VERY disturbing and an absolute must for fans of extreme metal and experimental music alike. It will most likely be HATED by anyone else but the first couple of minutes make it glaringly apparent that these guys don't really care! Cool.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heavier than the Earth...or the Sunn 18 April 2003
Format:Audio CD
Wow. Ouch. Argh. This is awesome. Having read the review on Head Heritage and read about O'Malley in the Wire, I tracked this down to see if it lived up to the hype. Not since the early Earache/Pathological days has music been so disturbing...so WRONG. From its opening seconds it hurts, upsets, challenges and tortures. It is NOT pleasant, I would certainly not invite these guys round for tea and biscuits, but the CD can certainly take pride of place. I cannot recommend it enough. Buy it and get disturbed, then seek councelling, recover, then buy everything by Sunn o))). Then go and have some more councelling!

4.0 out of 5 stars ! 27 Feb 2006
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
this is one very evil monster indeed. as you'll gather from the other reviews here, khanate are not pleasant listening. of course thats a ridiculous understatement so youre just going to have to buy it to witness the beast! all elements within the music contribute immensely to the sonic devastation but special mention to vocalist dubin. it really has to be heard to be appreciated. scary. apparently he went blue and passed out a few times when this record was being recorded and that comes as no suprise. he sounds like gollum on bad acid having a root canal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love or hate it 8 Feb 2004
By DD VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
There are no compromises with this band?! When I first heard the track 'Skincoat' (about making a protective coat from human skin!)I thought that it must have been recorded in Hell!? After buying the cd I am now sure that this is the case!? Without doubt Khanate are the most extreme Doom band that I have heard (and I listen to a lot of Doom). If you have heard Burning Witch you will know what to expect. If not be prepared for agonised 'vokills' (the bands' description), crushingly heavy rhythms, with a very free form structure and psychotic lyrics. I love 'em!

5.0 out of 5 stars Khanate, eponymous. 12 Jan 2013
By Mark
Format:Audio CD
A rare find, Khanate's first album. Highly priced, but highly prized.
Deconstructed doom at its finest, with Sunn 0)))'s Stephen O'Malley at the helm.
