Well worth a listen 14 April 2002

Track 6 will be better known by most UK listeners (at least) for being borrowed for the theme to the TV series "The Onedin Line", but there's plenty more within the "Spartacus" suites to get your teeth into.

However, I have to say that I'm a little disappointed with the quality of this production, being a listener to Classic FM and having heard other Orchestras' renditions of this piece. This is a shame, because it's a fully digital recording, yet lacks much of the dynamism I have heard elsewhere. There are also one or two slightly suspect harmonies and different sections of the orchestra not quite in time with each other! But these are very minor niggles. It's a superb piece of music, and this version is unbeatable value for money - especially if you're just getting into classical.

Spartacus the slave is sold and becomes gladiator. This story of the slave revolt and gladiator life in Ancient Rome is told through this fantastic score by Khachaturian
The St Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra gives an outstanding performance in this incredible recording. And it is clear that Andre Anichanov is in full control.
It is a brilliant release and I cannot fault it. The sound and dynamics are very good.
Full marks to Naxos for this well prices masterpiece of composition and recording.

Bought this after being blown away by an amazing live performance of this work. A nice reminder but can't beat the real thing.
