Even if you are unfamiliar with Khachaturian, this 20th century Armenian-Russian's music may well be known to you from its use in tv and film. As an introduction to his work, or to fill in gaps in your music collection, this value CD is a definite 'must have'. His music is tunerful, exciting and highly accessible whilst giving a flavour of Armenian folk melodies. Although the CD is most affordable, the production and performance qualities will not disappoint the most discerning listener. Lzaerev and the Bolshoi SO give a marvellous set of performances sympathetic and emotive yet without overbearing melodrama.

A great bargain with lots to enjoy. The Spartacus Adagio is an obvious favourite. An excellent performance and recording here. (Remember the Onedin Line?) But there's lot's more to discover here from a composer who has gone out of vogue a bit but is still worth exploring. Next try the third symphony in the newly re-released set of Stokowski's stereo recordings from the 60's and 70's.

Halfway through the CD it started to stammer during
Spartacus.
This continued throughout the whole CD, jittering and
juddering until the end.
Still you get what you pay for! It was very cheap
and not worth the postage to return.
I would not recommend this recording to my worst enemy.

Terrific performances - at an unbeatable price! 13 Aug. 2006

I can't imagine what led me to audition this particular recording of Khachaturian, musical kitsch I've heard countless times since my childhood, but I'm certainly glad I did. And if any of you have a stomach for this kind of thing, do not hesitate a moment longer in acquiring a copy of this marvelous CD! - Forget the Arthur Fiedler and Kiril Kondrashin recordings (among so many others). Here Alexander Lazarev and the Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra play this music as to the manner born. I simply cannot imagine better performances. And at this price, it's a steal!
