Product Description

Review

[W]orthwhile tool for developers and architects as they endeavor to understand the underpinnings of urban housing and look towards the future generations of urban projects. The premise and format of Key Urban Housing of the Twentieth Century is simple yet noteworthy, and the execution is compelling. --Howard Kozloff, Director of Operations in New York for Hart Howerton --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Product Description

The design of multiple housing - a new building type, especially for growing urban populations - was a major new area of activity for architects at the beginning of the twentieth century, and one that continues into the twenty-first century. This book features 87 of the most influential modern housing designs of the last 100 years by some of the best-known architects in the field. Each project is explained with a concise text and photographsand specially created scale drawings, including floor plans and site plans, sections and elevations where appropriate. The projects are organized in six roughly chronological chapters tracing the history of both public and private housing around the world. The detailed drawings allow each project to be analyzed in depth, which, alongside the author's authoritative text, will make this an invaluable resource for architects and students. As an added bonus, the book includes a CD-ROM containing digital files of all the drawings featured in the book.

I don't normally write reviews but I really felt I had to just write something for this one. The content was amazing, all of the best urban housing examples an architecture student could dream of but it was the 'cd-rom' which really amazed me. The plans sections and elevations are all in dwg format so that they can easily be analysed and used as inspiration in real design terms. I can't wait to show my colleagues this book/cd it blew me away- especially for the price.

useful, concise 20 Sep 2009

I was required to purchase this book for my Masters of Architecture program. It has a good set of drawings and concise description of relative projects. I did however need to purchase "Key Contemporary Buildings: Plans, Sections and Elevations (Key Architecture Series)" for additional information and plans of one of the projects in this book. Combined, the two books have quite a bit of useful information, especially if trying to do a case study. The included CD was useful but don't expect the files to be pristine. You'll definitely need to touch them up and check line weights before just printing and using.

All and all, I think the book was worth the price and is a good addition to any Architectural library.

I looked at this book at the book store for a while designing apartment buildings. I had to get it just to have it in my library. Great floor plans and inspiring ideas. Love Le Corbusier's floor plans for multi-leveled apartments!
