Indeed another one from the American production line, this is an outstanding debut album from someone who clearly has an unending mixed bag of stories from her past - as short as it currently is. Jessica has clearly has a...colourful...history, for speaking from experience, I know that the kind of sentiments found on this album come either straight from the heart, or from one very close by.
There are songs that speak of undying love for Mr. Right, no matter what it may mean ('I Want You', 'Symphony'); ones about her life before she met him, with an abusive boyfriend ('Your Girl' - best on the album, 'I'm Sorry'); and quite a few about the end of bad relationships (something she's clearly had experience of) with various different views thereupon: Depressed ('Sadly Beautiful', 'Gone'); exasperated ('Everything' - not one for those who left home to live with their partner); and positive, for he was scum anyway ('Even Angels Fall', 'Dreams Will Fade'). There are also a couple of standalone ones; 'For Wowser', written for one of her school friends - the homecoming queen, no less; and 'Indifference', one about her general demeanour towards bad boyfriends.
Jessica accompanies herself on the piano, and her voice could be described as an American Dido with a little of the overtone removed. She never pushes herself outside her comfort zone, and so the result is a smooth easy listening voice, rather than an enlivening in-your-face vocal attack. The orchestration (David Campbell & Kim Bullard) manages to tread the line between involvement and laissez-faire, and the combination of these factors with the lyrics tell a rather interesting story about someone who really shouldn't have had so many rough experiences at her age - a story that thankfully has a happy ending. Recently, she got married, and is now recording as Jessica Jacobs. Good luck to the pair of you.
Buy this, and buy her second one as well. It's called Chapter 2, and I'm listening to it as you read.

I first bought this after hearing "Even Angels Fall" which featured in one of my fave films ~ 10 things I hate about you, and for a while I never was totally mad about it...but after hearing it a few times you notice how good it really is. I really like "Symphony" and "For Wowser", but my favourite of all has definitely got to be "Everything". All I can say is buy the album even for this song! Its amazing, its such a powerful song, its got the most moving accompaniment to it, and I could listen to it all day. Buy it!

It took me a while to buy this album, despite it only being available second hand, and cheap. What pulled me to in the end were the reviews that I read on Amazon. Because I love piano led music, I had high hopes for Jessica's debut. All in all, I have not been disappointed. However, although I would be happy to say that this a great CD, it is not terribly different to many other good female singers/songwriters.

The opening track, "I Want You" is a good opener - quite a romantic song not just about love but also about lust.
Undeniably, one of the best songs is the very emotional "Your Girl", which tells the story of how a bad relationship can affect young children. "For Wowser" is another of my favourites, as it has beautiful lyrics, especially in the chorus.
"Gone", the closing song, is stark and simple, but has immense beauty because of this - the orchestration is just divine; the highlight of the album for me.

All in all, this is a good album. I feel that the tone is fairly consistent throughout, meaning that, apart from "Gone", none of the songs stand out on their own much. However, listened to as a whole piece of work, this collection offers much better tracks than many other CDs around today.
