Amazon.co.uk Review

A pair of pubescent boys in all their spotty and obnoxious glory whose boundless lust for coolness and girls is matched only by their bottomless ineptitude at achieving these goals, Kevin (Harry Enfield) and Perry (Kathy Burke) were two regular characters in Harry Enfield and Chums, a successful BBC sketch show. Over the three minutes or so one of their television sketches would run in each episode, Kevin and Perry were hilarious comic creations, but their antics severely test the patience spread out over 82 minutes. The script is a pretty flimsy excuse for a series of intermittently amusing gags about Ibiza beach culture (a worthy target), the sexual excitability of teenage boys and bodily excrescences of various kinds. Our heroes set off for the sun to lose their virginities and debut their bedroom mixed single, "All I Want to Do Is Do It". They meet the girls of their dreams, and a truly loathsome club DJ (the seemingly ubiquitous Rhys Ifans, without whom no bad British film could do without) and enjoy the fleshpots of beach life. It all starts to feel like a shabby stab at aping the success of such recent classic American gross-out comedies as American Pie and There's Something About Mary but without their emotional range (no, really, we're serious here) or ludic inventiveness. Nevertheless, it does have its moments, like the epic spot-squeezing sequence, a triumph of squelchy turpitude, and Kathy Burke is magnificent as ever cross-dressing as Perry, the quiet, slack-jawed one with the really, really bad posture and a major case of the hots for Kevin's mum. --Leslie Felperin

5.0 out of 5 stars best comedy ever, 1 Aug 2005
Great film, loads of extras, all in all a great buy. However, if you have no personality and find it hard to understand simple comedy this might not be for you. that is the only reasons why I can think some have given this a bad review.

4.0 out of 5 stars All they wanna do..., 5 Sep 2004
By bazbantam (Newbury, Berkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I approached this movie with some trepidation. Harry Enfield hadn't been funny since the divorce from Paul Whitehouse, so sitting through an hour and a half of one of his more annoying creations could have been quite painful. I could almost hear that voice in the back of my head saying "You don't want to do thaaat!"
I was a little suprised to discover that it wasn't Porridge the movie that I was watching. Whilst most British comedies are over long episodes of a situation comedy, Mr. Enfield and co have put great thought into translating their creations to the big screen. The jokes traditionally hit the mark (come on, floating poo, how could it fail?) and the two leads are spot on in their portrayal of a geeky rights of passage.
The plot is simple enough, Kevin and Perry go to Ibizia in hope of losing their virginities and end up being lackies for the most heinous DJ around. Not sure why Kevins dad is played by Hugo from the vicar of dibley though, it somewhat takes away from the believability of it. Don't ask me how, it just does.
What earns this release the coveted 4th star is the extras. Several making of featurettes that are interesting make up the normal standard, but there's more. The boys music video is included, but best of all is the inclusion of the best bits of Kevin from Harry Enfield and Chums in 'Kevins guide to being a teenager' that I think may have been previously released on video on its own.
A Saturday evening film that will give you a laugh and get you in the mood to go out and, bizarrely, squeeze a few spots.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kevin and Perry go large, 6 Aug 2004
This film is one of the funniest ive ever seen. Its got lots of stupid humour in it and some parts are excruitiatingly cringing, but still funny, much like 'Meet the Parents'. But this comedy is 24 carat Harry Enfield, and i would reccommend this film to anyone who likes 'Harry Enfield and Chums' (BBC)
