Kettle Whistle is exceptional as a document of the various facets of this unique and basically untouchable band! Like previous reviews have stated, Jane's fans will recognise much of what is on this disc, but what WILL surprise them is the differences in the specifics. For example, "Had a Dad" now comes complete with death-toll bell ringing during the chorus; "Oceansize" replaces the incendiary Navarro soloing with pure muscle; and "Jane Says" is a newer live version, similar to the performance on the "Three Days" DVD.
The new songs are more like a revelation of character and adventure than 5 star Jane's Addiction songs, which is to say they are still a great deal more interesting and socially aware than most stuff you'd read about in Kerrang or Q this week/month. "Kettle Whistle" has a beautiful are delicate chorus whilst elsewhere we get "My Cat's Name is Maceo" which is a gem of a throwaway tune about Perry's cat - "He's a little man in a cat's body" - with added saxaphone by James Brown's finest man Maceo Parker.
You do also get great littles snatches of Perry's unimpressed banter to a heckler; "I didn't think it would come to that. This guy really is a moron! We threw a Birkenstock at me! He doesn't even understand fashion!"
Classic! If you're a new fan I say grab this while you're checking out Nothing's Shocking.

This is either for fans, or people who haven't heard Jane's Addiction. It mostly contains tracks you'll find on other JA releases, but some of the versions are really good. The live tracks in particular are much more intense than their studio recorded counterparts. Don't get it if you already have the first three JA albums (unless you are really keen), because ther's not much new here. A good buy.

The nation of alternative rock follower's cry out for Jane'sAddiction to get back together for years, then they do. They get back together without the original bass player Eric Avery as he had other Commitments which he could not get out of. They record some new material with Flea on bass on do a nation wide tour, of which they sell out every show, does this not tell you something people. The album is a mixture of live material, demos and out-takes it's contents has 4 new tracks written by the band for the album. Indeed if ever there was a band lit with rocket fuel it be these boys. Their new songs don't really go anywhere but this is more of a hardcore fans album with tracks like 'Stop, Been Caught Stealing and Coming Down The Mountain'. After the initial shock that the band have come back and recorded some new songs you are not really left with much else.
